Park/Neutral position switch trouble code
Park/Neutral position switch trouble code
I have a 5 spd 2000 maxima. My "service engine soon" light came on recently. I had autozone read the trouble code which came up P1706 (Park/Neutral position switch or circuit fault). Nothing seems to be wrong with the car. What does the neutral safety switch do on a manual transmission? The won't crank unless the clutch is pushed in, but this is normal.
From the Electronic Service Manual:
Possible causes:
(1) Harness or connectors [The park/neutral position (PNP) switch circuit is open or shorted.]
(2) Park/neutral position (PNP) switch
Note the switch appears to be on top of the bell housing.

Thanks for the info. Do you know what the PNP switch does on a manual trans? Besides the SES light being on, I am not having any problems.
Also, where can I get a service manual for the maxima? I have a Haynes manual, but I have already found a couple things that are wrong with it.
