shift to neutral without clutch?

hey i was just wondering does it hurt the tranny/flywheel/clutch if i go to neutral from any gear?

i found a point where if you switch to nwutral from any gear, it slides out so smooth its as if you are pressing the clutch....its right after you let go of the gas pedal

so yea.....does it hurt the tranny or no?

thx

Don't really see how it could hurt, unless you somehow start pressing back into gear. The dogs in the gears, and the synchros are all DIS engaging, not engaging.

If you're good enough, you can upshift and downshift without the clutch, but getting good enough is a bit tough on the tranny.

Go to www.howthingswork.com, and look up the info on a manual tranny. You'll feel better.

Of course, the obvious question is ... why bother?

yes you can pull it out of gear and it won't hurt. yes it is possible to put it in gear if you rev-match but like skydaver said... why?? Looking cool in front of friends is not worth the cost of a new clutch/tranny

lol thats so true.

thx for the info

and i am not looking to learn how to put it in gear without the clutch, was just wondering if pulling it out of gear without a clutch hurts it, because then you can actually increase the shifting speed (with practice of course)

like:

pull it out of gear, and while doing so press the clutch before you put it in gear, thus the time you disengage the clutch shortens by exactly 1/2

again thx

NO NO NO!

You're not taking into account the time you LOSE when the car goes in the shop because you missed pushing in the clutch by a half-second and left a bunch of gear-metal on the highway.

And... you shouldn't be pulling it out of gear while it's under load, so you're not shortening the clutch disengagement because you have to let up on the gas before pulling the stick.

All around this is just a bad idea... but learn if you must. I did it on an '87 1/2 Ford Escort and before '88 1/2 had to replace some expensive parts!
