Painful grinding noise occurs when....

I turn the wheel all the way to the left.

I have no idea what it is but it almost physically hurts me when I hear it.
Sounds like grinding/groaning almost.

In order to avoid this I never turn the wheel all the way. Something is definitely wrong but as to what...I have no idea....

Any ideas on what this could be guys?

mine does the same thing and it makes my skin crawl. i think it is normal though. something to do with the power steering pump and the bad turning radius

but this grinding noise makes my turning wheel radius even worse cause i can never turn the wheel all the way.

And that noise has got to concern you.....sounds like more damage is being done if ya know what i mean.

I have a similar problem with my car. When I turn the wheel HALF WAY to the left and apply any amount of power I get a really bad squeaking/grinding noise from the passanger side. The slower I am going the more of a grind, and the faster I go the more of a squeak. I have inspected my bearings and they are 100%, I am assuming it is my CV axleon the passanger side even though the CV boot is intact because it is a rebuilt one.(from previous accident.) am taking it backand having them put on a new CV-axle. Try to look for "rub" marks on the inside of your wheel wells to see if that is what is making the noise. The other thing is your bearings.

not wheel rub.....and most likely not the wheel bearing.

possibly the cv axle?

Damn...I am experiencing the same problem. It only happened when I turned and now when i drive staright it makes that nasty grinding problem. I took my wheels off and discovered that it might be the cv axle, cause my whole rotor moves when jerk it back and forth. The other side is doesn't move for nothing. Any suggestions? I'm not driving my car cause I dont want my car to fall apart.

Wheel noise! i'm scared

1. I'm having a similar problem. Regularly can turn left or right with no problems, no noise. But when I turn right, and hit a small bump or the car rises or lowers due to the road, there is a grinding noise on the left wheel. I have no idea what it is and it only does it when turning right.

2. Now when I begin to brake while driving straight, when reaching 15-0 mph until stop, there is a noise coming from the right side of the wheel.

My car is all screwed up! SOMEONE HELP BEFORE MY WHEELS FALL OFF!!!!

I also have the grinding/scraping noise when making 90 degree right turns. I took it in to Nissan last Friday. The tech told the service writer that the steering stops needed to be lubricated. This sounded like crap to me. I picked the car up yesterday and noticed just this morning that the noise is still there. I will have to take it back again. I'm thinking it's the outer CV joint.

Relax Guys!!!! I don't think anything is wrong. When you turn your wheel full-left or full-right, there is a bolt with a white cap on it that contacts a plate on the lower control arm. When the suspension travels up or down when the cap contacts the metal plate, you will hear a grind/rubbing sound. It's worse sounding if the plastic cap gets knocked off. The sound is normal, if not a little scary sounding. Try putting a little grease on the plate. Stick your head up under your car behind the front wheels and look in around the lower ball joint. You will see the bolt with white cap and the metal plate on the control arm. You can also try to back off just a little on the wheel when you feel full-lock (R or L) when turning.

No worries.

I removed my bump stops a long time ago. My grinding starts as soon as I start to turn the wheel and apply power.

I took my car into service yesterday and they said it was the cotter pin that was causing some of the vibration and most of the grinding. They put a new cotter pin and torqued it to factory specs and my car is good to go.

Rob, My bad, I didn't read/soak in that you were applying power and only turning the wheel slightly.... That sounds like a bad CV joint. They usually only start making noise when the boot gets old, splits and lets the grease escape. But, have you ever seen the mechanics of a CV joint???? I don't imagine they handle the full power of the 3.5 (or even the 3.0) very well when they are twisted sharply in a tight turn. I try to drive gently when the wheel is turned sharply.
Anyway... my grinding noise occurs when I turn sharply against the stops and apply the brakes, as when pulling into a parking spot, totally different scenario.

I took my car back to Nissan this morning and had the tech ride in the car with me. He heard the noise that I described to him. He hooked up an electronic ear to listen to the left strut while he was driving it. he said that the strut needed to be replaced.

he is BS'ing you ......the sound occurs even after I put in new aftermarket struts.....

I'm hoping its as simple as replacing cotter pins (whatever they are)

HEY AUGIE:

did you get that replaced under warranty?

anyone know roughlyhow much it'll cost to replace either a CV joint or cotter pins?

It does not matter if he's BSing because if that does not fix it, it will be taken back until it is fixed. If you use the same strut bearing with your aftermarket struts, you could still have the same problem as the old one.
