I got WARNING ticket for my exhaust... please help!!!

It was Friday when i drove up the hill... i was on right lane and the cop was on the left lane... we was on the light (red) so the light turns green and i push my gas smoothly... i did 30 (the speed limit is 50mph) on the hill so i saw the cop doing about 20mph... my exhaust is soooo loud on the hill... so after 1-2 mins i saw the lights came on from the cop car... i was like "fu*k... ticket for my exhaust? or for too slow?" (I was 99% sure for my exhaust) anyways... the cop came..."hi sir... you cant have an aftermarket exhaust on your car" after a few minutes a cop came again "i'll give you a warning ticket for an aftermarket exhaust, you have 20 days to put your regural exhaust on your car"... i was surprise because said "aftermarket exhaust" and he didnt say "loud exhaust"... my question is : what it will happen if i dont change it in 20 days? I already sold my regural muffler but i have a silencer for my muffler in my trunk... opinions... thanks!

"just put your silencer and go to DMV because the cop gave you warning
for the loud exhaust not for an aftermarket exhaust... they cant give you
for an aftermarket exhaust"

a few things you might want to know...

"Section 14-80 of the Motor Vehicle Statues of the State of Connecticut prohibits the use of a baffle creating noise that violates nuisance laws. First-time offenders of the traffic code receive a $78 fine and a warning ticket. The warning ticket gives the lawbreaker 14 days to repair the exhaust pipe. After the grace period, the owner must bring the repaired bike into the Department of Motor Vehicles for inspection. The DMV will confiscate the driver's registration if the owner has not repaired the exhaust pipe. "

and
http://www.cga.state.ct.us/ps98/lcoamd/LCOAMD04940.htm
"No person, including a motor vehicle dealer or repairer or a motorcycle dealer, shall install, and no person shall use, on a motor vehicle, a muffler or mufflers lacking interior baffle plates or other effective muffling devices, a gutted muffler, a muffler cutout or a straight exhaust except when the motor vehicle is operated in a race, contest or demonstration of speed or skill as a public exhibition pursuant to subsection (a) of section 14-164a, or any mechanical device which will amplify the noise emitted by the vehicle."

and
friends are idiots and usually tell you what they "think" not what is "right" or "legal".

So, I don't see where it's illegal to have an aftermarket exhaust, just that it has to not be too loud. If I was you I'd call a shop that does state inspections and ask them. BUT, if you show up to get the ticket tossed and it DOESN'T pass they can pull your registration RIGHT THERE... you've been warned.

you asked for advice so I gave it... if you want to start talking laws I'm GLAD you got a ticket for too much noise. Not that I want you to pay a ticket...you can get out of it by making your car legal. You have a silencer, USE IT! There's no need for your car to make so much noise that a cop notices and turns around to pull you over.

People drive by my house all day with that ricer **** on the cars, one guy's exhaust is so loud it woke my kid and there's an air conditioner less than 15 feet from his bed. Guess what I did...i called the cops and told them when and where to sit (he drives by every night at 10:15pm) and he finally got pulled over. I laughed and laughed, and now what I believe is that same car drives by but it's a lot more quiet.

Just put an 18-24" resonator in the B pipe and be done with it. That custom **** saved you alot huh.

Cattmans B & the new Frank exhaust have nice resonators. But you can get a Magnaflow res and have it welded in, anything under 18" won't do.

First off, put the silencer on. Since it was just a warning, you shouldn't need to report back to the DMV or anything. Personally, I'd just get a big resonator welded on when you have the cash, and just leave the silencer on. I bet it'll pretty quiet after that.

no flames intended but if you're wrong you're going to screw him pretty bad, so before you give advice please state if you KNOW it or THINK it.

he said ""i'll give you a warning ticket for an aftermarket exhaust, you have 20 days to put your regural exhaust on your car"

and you think the cop went to the trouble to pull him over and give him a warning with "20 days" on it, but doesn't expect the owner to actually prove he made his car quieter?

I think you're wrong... Greek, you need to call the number on the ticket and see what's the truth.

You can indeed get charged for operating a vehicle with a non-functioning exhaust and/or a vehicle whose exhaust system has been modified in such as a way that it does not comply with federal or state noise emission regulations, but you cannot be ticketed just for having an aftermarket exhaust.

Mention Moss-Magnusson to judge and the case will be immediately dismissed..what the cop is telling you is incorrect and in fact, illegal.

1. You are wrong. States can make it illegal to install an aftermarket exhaust. Massachusetts just had a bill die that would have done just that, and it was modelled after another state's law (can't remember which). If a car won't pass inspection with an aftermarket exhaust it may not technically be "illegal" but it still doesn't pass inspection.

2. WTF are you talking about here?
Would you ****ing people STOP GUESSING and start giving FACTS? This guy asked a question about the law regarding an aftermarket exhaust and you say "mention Magnusson-Moss to the judge"? Do you even know what that means? It says (and I quote) "that a manufacturer may not deny warranty coverage solely because a customer has used an aftermarket part."

WTF does this issue have to do with a ticket? Your moronic advice (if he took it) would get this guy either another ticket or his registration pulled. My point? If someone asks a question and you don't KNOW the answer, STFU and just keep reading. Your dumbass replies are doing more damage than good.

There, now I feel better.

I would call the DMV and get some info there. Or maybe an aftermarket shop that sells exhausts can give u some info. You don't want you're license/registration f'ed with.

I am 23 and a police officer for a state agancy in New Jersey which shall remain nameless and i just want to say that i can never see myself giving someone a ticket for a loud exhaust, tint, clear lights, system or any other similiar items. The cops giving out tickets for things such as exhaust are old school and are basically just messing with you. Do like i did, if you cant beat em join em.

Hey GreekMaxima, just put on your resonator, it should make it, and tell the cops you had an exhaust leak or something. My max is fairly loud with the Y-pipe and PowerTech muffler, never got a ticket or pull over but I kept the resonator and the originale catalyst. I'm glad where I live cops dont bother unless they caught you
racing.

Cheers

AA

Good luck.

wow...I guess you had a really lousy weekend. No nookie and/or you forgot your PROZAC.

Moss-Magnuson has been used in many many defenses of the legislation efforts supported by SEMA to further their cause by eliminating and/or defeating legislation against the SEMA group interests, namely, the use of aftermarket parts.

Nearly every single court challenge that SEMA has brought to the courts based on the frivolous 'installation of an aftermarket exhaust system' ticket has resulted in either the charge being thrown out of court and/ot the legislation changed to be more specific as to why the exhaust is illegal by either tying the exhaust to noise and/or emissions violations.

Following is a good example right from the SEMA website
http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=8065

Hope you enjoy the beejesus out of these moronic write-ups in the SEMA website

This guy said he doesnt have money/is broke, but he PMed me just now saying that he just bought Tein springs for $150. I wonder what this guy wants?

Kalifornia has the worst laws in the country about cars and gun ownership. I grew up in CT and now live in Colordo. Kalifornia is beautiful, but the laws are ludicrous.

I had a great weekend, thanks

I'm all for what they did in that article... they took the subjectivity out of cops giving noise tickets. The law he signed allowed for setting up testing stations so, if a cop gave a ticket, the owner could go there and see if his car exceeds 95 decibels.

What they didn't do was EVEN MENTION Magnusson-Moss. M-M ONLY has to do with a dealer voiding a warranty for an unrelated aftermarket part. If he mentions M-M in court, the judge (who will know the law) will quickly realize he's trying to BS him and he'll lose, quickly.

So, before you give advice, please learn about the act you're suggesting he use in his defense. SEMA didn't mention it in the article and IT DOES NOT APPLY to this case.

Or maybe you can explain how "getting a noise ticket = dealer voiding his warranty for an aftermarket part" ?? I'm all ears.

Here's an idea, instead of getting opinions from people around the country that live in 50 different states with 50 different laws, why not just call your local Motor Vehicle administration and ask them about an 'aftermarket exhaust' ticket. Also, get ahold of a certified inspection station and see what they say. He!!, you could even read the ticket itself and find out exactly what the infraction is and read the back and maybe get some more info. A little investigating on your part can go a long way. Something to think about, if your exhaust is loud enough to get the attention of a cop, it's probably too loud and you could just put on your resonator and quiet that thing down. Either that or buy a Harley if you really like the super loud sound. Just my .02

if u dont show up and prove that u fixed ur exhaust problem then u get a ticket so wtf are some people saying that u get a warrant....that might be how it goes in ct but i really doubt it...just show up with the silencer on and just bull**** with the officer checking ur car....say the reason why it was so loud is bc the silencer wasnt in....bull**** bull****...and i garrantee u he wont even question it...if he does then run and hide somewhere...ill tell u when the coast is clear

Dude, just chill. Go pickup a dynomax 17748 muffler, its like $40ish so dont give me the broke excuse either. Slap it on, and throw on a magnaflow 18-22" resonator as well ($45-50 ) If you dont have the dough on you to do both, get atleast the resonator its not too expensive and im sure they will slap it on for like $30 a good portion of the drone, loud note will be reduced.

Click Here for the dynomax site...and Click Here for the resonator. The 18" will due just fine, but if you want to make sure its enough get the 22".

Those are your two "cheap" choices. Pick one and do it, if you do both its gonna pretty much dead quiet.

Sooo true.

Sell the aftermarket muffler and buy a stock one. go visit a junk yard. Stop making excuses. If you want a loud ricer exhaust on your car in a state that has laws that strictly prohibits it, then fine, just dont ***** about it when you have to suffer the consequences for your decisions. It's life. Live with it, or move to another state.

Something to think about, if your exhaust is loud enough to get the attention of a cop, it's probably too loud and you could just put on your resonator and quiet that thing down. Either that or buy a Harley if you really like the super loud sound. Just my .02

this thread is so dumb! A warning ticket is not a ticket, it is a warning. So why are you worried , take it as a piece of advice that maybe your muffler is too loud. maybe the cop was right, you have a maxima buddy not a rice rocket. so tone the car down get oem exhaust and enjoy the peace and quiet of a maxima not a honda.
