Where are the cams?

Are there any cams for the Maxima (3.5VQ) yet? Seems like someone should have gotten some from a salvage motor and had a little custom grind action from Crower or Isky by now. Or am I the only one with this idea?

Yeah, but 4 cams...

It's hard enough changing cams on V-SOHC engines, much less V-DOHC engines. What a friggin mess that would be...

Which ones gained 15HP? There are 3 grinds.

I wonder how much salvage cams would cost + grinding. Probably about the same. hmm...

and you can't do it with the engine in the car (so I'm told). Still, cams, headers (assuming someone makes good ones), and the ECU could make for a nasty NA ride.

I wouldn't even bother trying to do it while the engine was still in the car. My truck is RWD, so that at least helped, but it was still a total b1tch to get the valve covers off and out from around/under everything in the engine bay. With double the cams, I would go insane!! I don't honestly know if I would have the patience to do something like that again...

My hands hurt for WEEKS afterward, too...

Hmm, I see the Nismo cams gained about 15HP cost $1600 and have an unknown grind.

Don't quote me, but supposedly for the VQ30DE-K owners, the 4th gens had slightly more aggressive cams than the 3.0 5th gens, so technically speaking, finding junked 4th gen cams could be a performance solution. Not sure on fitment though, I don't see why it wouldnt fit.

TK

P.S. I think 3.5VQ owners are SOL for cheaper upgrades.

What do the lift cam grind and duration numbers mean? I am not too familiar with cams.

Doesn't the 350z have more aggressive cams than the Maxima? Perhaps a salvage motor from a 350z would be some cheaper cams?

I was thinking that if the 350z has more agressive cams to start with the gains should be even more in a 255HP Maxima.

Word from the my350z forum is that Crane cams will be coming out with a set for the VQ35 for about $800 early next year.

350Z gets its gains from a single stage intake manifold design, and different exhaust manifold design.

You "could" do the install yourself, but it would be a major PITA...

They supposedly take about 10 hours to install, so what's your local shop's hourly rate?

$65/$75...I would still do them myself. That's way to steep a price for an install.

Yea thats why if you do end up dishing out the cash for an install that pricey, you should do anything else that would require removing the head at the same time. 600-700 bucks for cam install is for most too much, but 700-800 bucks for cam install, and stronger valvetrain and smoothing out the head flow, isn't as bad a price.

I think some of the cams (Tomei) come with better springs for the valves. I'm not sure though.

Along with valve springs and retainers?

I know its got to be a major PITA to do it. If it were a 302 Ford , I would do it, but not with this thing. I would like to see what the gains are, because with headers , Cams and ECU, that would be a beast of a Max and all NA ! :nuaghty:

Now you're thinking like I am. ECU, cams, and headers. Maybe a little port and polish too.

Um, no. Try again. They came with cardboard and plastic. (Mine also came with titanium retainers, but those were purchased seperately.)

I find the prices on these things discouraging. Parts only. I don't care about labor.

Well.. The Nismo cams gained 15HP in a 350Z. They should do similar in a Max. I don't know how the Tomei cams compare to the Nismo camps or anyone elses.

Has anyone else heard about the cams from Crane.
$800 sounds alot more palatable.

No...too many other things going on the car right now. BUT, it is fine because I wanted to wait on the ECU anyway.

Below is from a thread in the my350z forum.

*EDIT* I called and spoke to Dave at Crane cams and they are looking into new cams for the 350Z engine that will be offered in several stages similar to their other cam lines. They are due out early next year and he believes that they will be in the $700 - $800 dollar range. To anyone looking into geting cams I would definitley wait to see what Crane has to offer...
