Took off those steering bump stops....

my mechanic took them off on my 01 SE with 17"....and i get in the car, turn the wheel, still the same way.

i was really suprised, and then i thought he didnt take off the right ones. but he told me that he knows where they are, what they are, and that the have the white cap cover on them.

any suggestions?...should i put it back on? maybe the mechanic didnt take the right one off?

Because the Maxima has a turning radius of a 747

I am very sure he took the right ones off.

Its just that i dont know why the steering wheel doesnt turn anymore, is there anyone here that took them off and can tell me something about this?

I read about it a long time ago, and i know some people took it off.

the bumpstop isnt the reason why the turning radius sucks. it alot more complex then just a piece of rubber. its in the whole steering mechanism

There put there for a reason.... it's a front wheel drive car and you crank that wheel over too far you'll screw up your CV joints and steering rack.

The setup is not just a set of bumpstops that stops the travel of the steering system. The bumpstops are there in case there was a mechanical failure (as a backup). You only have so many degrees of deflection when turning the Maxima's wheel...

Russmaxmaniac took his off a long time ago on his 01 SE with 17"...and he said it gave him about a 1/4 more turn by just taking those bump stops off.

isnt this right? if no, then of course i'll just put them back on because there is no reason for them to be off if i dont get anything from it

You figure that Nissan spends thousands of dollar on research and they put those in for something. Doesn't matter if we know what they are for. Leave them in.

I know the difference. The 2k1 turns sharper than my 2k3 by far. It is not only the stops but the lower control arms as well, design difference.

of course, because you have a 2k1 GLE, there is a difference in the radius between the 2k1 GLE that comes with the 16" to the 2k1 SE with the 17". I thought that the only difference between the 2k1 with 16" to 17" is those steering bump stops that i took off, but seems to me that not really, there is something else behind it that blocks the steering rack from turning like a 2k/2k1 maxima with 15" or 16" wheels.

why are you bumping this?
what more do you need to know?
REMOVING THE BUMPSTOPS WILL NOT IMPROVE STEERING RADIUS!!!!

we already answered that.

"it's a front wheel drive car and you crank that wheel over too far you'll screw up your CV joints and steering rack."
"the bumpstop isnt the reason why the turning radius sucks. it alot more complex then just a piece of rubber. its in the whole steering mechanism"

you have three choices - completely replace all the steering components and change it to rear wheel drive, buy another car, or better yet, you can deal with it like we all do.

Its the same steering rack, you actually think that nissan changed it?, they're cheap, they'll do it the crappy way like for example adding bolts to stop the steering rack from going more incase it will rub.

Imagine you get a 2k/2k1 GLE with 16" and you got the good radius i am looking for, you upgrade the wheels and put 18" , you're gonna still have the good radius. you actually think that there is a whole different steering system between the 2k/2k1 GLE and SE?!. no way, its something much more simpler then that

you got the answers you're going to get so how about YOU go find a different answer, rather than just bumping this same-ole same-ole.

post back here when you find your answer
