keyless entry remote question

hi, just bought a new 03 maxima yesterday (11/14/03) and it didnt come with a keyless entry remote. so i was wondering could i buy any nissan maxima keyless entry remote off ebay and use it for my car (obviously buy a 02 or 03 year model) or does it have to be a specific kind? and do i program it myself or do i have to go to the dealership to do it for me? thanks

The car should come with 2 remote transmitters. If you did not get them, somebody else has them and can use them to unlock your car. They may even have one of the keys too.

The key could be a problem. However, it is easy enough to program out the old remotes once you get a new one. The key fob mechanism holds id's for 4 remotes. Every time you program one in, the oldest of the 4 is dropped. All you have to do is program in the same one 4 times and the code for the original remotes is gone.

Sorry to jump in on the thread, but I assume the dealer the only place to get the remote? My girlfriend got her keys stolen and had to get the car towed to the dealer so they could cut her a new key. The key was like 60 bucks, but they wanted $165 for the remote, so we didn't get it. Does $165 sound right?

It sounds high. They probably included the price of programming it too I suppose.

$165!!!??!?!?!
I got 2 remotes of ebay for $15. I programmed them myself. It was easy. That's the route I'd go.
The key is a different story. It does have to be programmed by the dealer and they are not cheap.

Programming is easy. No need to take it to a dealer.
