Some guys go from a standing start, and just mash the pedal. You might get tons of wheelhop depending on how new your tires are, track prep conditions...

I use XFirepwr's method. Brake torque to 1700 (wait until you see second amber light flash) come off the brake completely, feather throttle, stab the throttle as soon as traction isn't an issue. Usually instantly if track is nice and gummy. If not done right, you will torque steer/spin like crazy. That's what 265 lb ft tq will do for fwd cars.

Using this method is how I always get my best times and best 60'. And Im always around .550-.700 reaction time. I hardly ever get pulled out of the hole if the car in the lane over is in the same class. That's the beauty of auto, you cant mess up ! Practice makes perfect.

Launching street and on track are two different animals though. I wouldn't even think of launching at 1700 on street. I just go from a standing start.

at the strip, do you guys with autos launch in "D"? or do you start in "1" or "2" and then shift up when needed?

its a pain to launch in 1st because the range is really short and you gotta shift anyway
start in second and you only have to shift once

sweet! always wondered what was best. last time i went (first time ever), i went from 1, 2, to D...but my times didn't seem as quick as they should of been. i'll try 2 to D next time.

oh, and you turn O/D off correct? or on (not sure how to say that)...whichever it is after you hit the button and the light comes on. is that what you guys do?

There is no over drive in 03 or 02. is just 123 and 4.
It depend on what flow your boat. the major things is that you have to worry is wheel spine and torque steer. With out these problem your launch would be perfect. first thing I am worried about is traction that you can't correct or just let off the gas basecally you loose time. then when I am about 20 to 40 mph is when I am flying every where. You have be very quick to correct it even two hand don't work. so ,manual shift is not a option. my experience is that you step it slowly and do not mash the peddal very hard.

"3" or "D" it doesn't matter. The time that it takes for the TC to lock-up in "3" or "O/D off" in 3rd gear won't make for much difference in the 1/4mile. It will only make a big difference if you go past the 1/4mile past 125mph+ where having 3rd gear with the TC locked will allow you to utilize it by holding the gear to a higher mph.

Guys, good luck when you mash the gas pedal because the Max gets very thirsty when you do that.

No s**t ! I have been very disciplined of late, and it does affect your avg mpg. But the desire is still there. I call it VQ Syndrome.

just my .02 but I did a few hard launches from a dead start this weekend, and was getting lots of rf wheel spin. Using an old trick from my drag racing days, I backed my car up about a foot, and launched hard again, that time I got wheel spin at both tires. Not sure if that was a coincidence or not.
