That was the best step by step set of directions ever. It is a simple process but because you took plenty of pictures which were very clear it really makes the process absolutly midless to follow.

Its funny that we call it a ghetto airbox mod. I did the equivelent on my buddies camaro and he insisted that is was a "custom" airbox mod not a "ghetto" airbox mod.

Bringing the thread back from the dead!

I just got my maxima 03 gle about two weeks ago, and I am loving it, I have been digging around the forums for a while now and I came across GAB, I have decided to do it, because I didn't want to spend any money on an expensive intake. I did it today morning and it is awesome, thumbs up to whoever came up with this idea =)

I have used a blue coathanger (LOL), eventualy I will just buy a second filter holder and chop the top off, but for now this is great!

Ill take some pictures on how i did it asap!

Considering aftermarket intakes have an entirely exposed filter, I doubt that an open airbox would cause any problems.

absolutely one of the most ghetto projects i've done so far on my infiniti I30...lol but for what its worth; i do like the deeper sound produced from an open air box...not too ricey but enough to say hey, this kid can role in style with an Infiniti '01 I30. I'm hoping theres somewhat an improvement with gas mileage with this simple mod. I'm gonna try to get my timing advanced soon too

I tried this mod yesterday and I don't feel the bottom of the filter is nearly secure enough. I straightened and bent the hanger very nicely, if I do say so myself, but after installing it in the car, while the top was very secure, the bottom was not really secure at all. Am I doing something wrong? Those of you who have done this, do you feel the bottom part of the hanger is holding the filter adequately? Actually, I am thinking that the design Bluesbrekr used would be significantly more secure.

I've done it-> took it off-> done it--> took it off. Fisrst two times it was unsecure. Did it ghetto outside right in the car. When I finally was pissed off, I took filter home got myself another hanger and sharpie.

P.S. Now everything secured in place and filter doesn't move I've even tried with hands. (8WHP) FTW

Thanks. Yeah, I made mine inside and took my time. I think I did it as good as I am going to get it. It fits very well and is straighter even that in the pictures. The thing is I dont see how the bottom of the filter will ever have very much, if any, pressure from the hanger holding it against the airbox. The top is definately sufficiently tight, it is just the bottom that I am worried about with this design.

I love this mod... my butt dyno says it's good for 200 hp. well, no, but It does pull harder to the redline, and I like the increased induction noise...

I am really glad this was bumped... The issue of intakes on a 5th gen needs more attention.

Why don't you just cut out the front of the airbox, relocate the battery to the trunk, and take out the drivers side headlight while you're at it. Ghetto ram air!!!! haha.

There has been no real discussion on the GAB in this thread for over a year, and it's been bumped by newbs whoring to 15, three times in a row now, maybe it needs a lock?

There was never a VQ33DE It was a VG33.

I've posted many dynos many times from different members, not going to do it again, but yes, ~ 9whp.
