Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge as to what effect on the car it would have to remove the sensor on the side of the intake snorkle?

its an air intake sensor (forget the real name) but just take it out of the scoop carefully and zip tie it to the battery tie down. i take it ur guna install an intake?

I assume the ECU uses it to calibrate throttle and things like that. So even if I tie it to somewhere in the engine, it wouldn't do me any good would it? I am just thinking about this because I have some ideas of GAB, but dunno if that sensor is crucial to be part of it.

if ur removin the snorkel the best place to put it is zip tied to the battery tie down that way it gets a decent reading of the air that ur car will be sucking in it will be fine there

I am actually thinking to use the existing intake box minus the snorkel, then extend it to just behind the bumper. Sounds like an idea or someone else has already tried it?

After reading some reviews on what ppl use for their intake, either GAB , CAI, or short ram, I just have the feeling that maxima does not benefit as much from those intakes as much as other cars. sure, you get some top end power at the expense of torque and responsiveness. Good thing, I did not spend money on those expensive intakes yet. Maybe GAB is the way to go hahahaha

WOw, I see, you basically took out all the tubings and housings before the MAF and hook up a filter to it. so essentially it's a shorter version of those short ram filters that they sell out there, am I correct?

yep pretty much its clean and works great and best part very inexpensive! its really easy to install just get a filter and adapter from ebay or autozone and 4 nuts, bolts washers and remove all the stock airbox and take out the air sensor thingy and the other sensor and zip tie them out of the way. then upbolt the maf tube from the airbox connect the adapter to it and the fliter then ur done.

So I am assuming you would have the same problem as short ram filters do where it feels sluggish at start up and on hot days right? Just want to know the pro and cons of that setup.

basically any setup stock or custom is guna be affected by heat, as for the start up if ur talkin about like off the line then yes ur guna loose a tad bit of low end torque but honestly with these cars they already have alot of it so its not like ur noticing huge differences. mine has a nice whistle to it too at certain revs kinda sounds like a turbo it sounds really deep and throaty so its worth it if ur lookin for a little more top end and and alot of wooooop! lol

After seeing your pic with your setup, I was like did you steal mine and pop a filter to it. hahahaha. Anyway, Do you have the MAF adapter part number? and I am assuming any cone filter will work right?

unfortunitly i dont have the number but if u go on ebay they have it i havent seen one lately for the 2ks up so im guna just get the 95-99 one like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tab%3DWatching and if u want to get the adapter at autozone just go to the section with all the intake parts they have the adapter for like 6 bucks n they have the same filter as the one i posted from ebay for 25 bucks.yes any filter will work as long as its the same as the adapter 3''.

Why not use some pop charger filter? I thought those are better than those most other cone filters. assuming price is not a concern.

To really get cold air moving wouldn't you have to relocate the battery? get it out of the way! I can't see how drilling 4 holes is going to increase volume and especially temp from that part of the engine bay?

They didn't say GAB is meant to be cold air intake. Those holes would just increase the volume of air that's available to the engine when you rev high, it is in fact the same principle as WAI, or short ram intakes you can buy on the market. During high way speed, the air that intake draws from is still a bit higher than ambient. It's during the standing around on a hot day that it really affects the start up performance. To really get true CAI requires making a hole in your fender well to gain access to the "cleaner" air behind the bumper. But personally after reading what everyone had to say, there's just no real cover all bases intakes for 5th gen maxima. And that's just too bad.

At the risk of sounding stupid, would duct tape work? All that's important is that the filter is properly sealed to the housing, right?

It might not work because you can't duct tape the bottom part of the filter. Hanger is MUCH easier.

Ok, hanger it is then. I just thought using black duct tape would look less ghetto.
Edit: I did it with the hanger, and it works perfectly! Awesome write up.

I might need to go back to stock...
I think I'll just save up for an intake. I heard the Berk one is good?

Adds hp too, in one of the posts it was dyno'ed. Make sure the filter does'nt drag down tho, dirty air will mess up the MAF.

Im going to test this tomorrow. But along with the hangers I am going to apply a small bead of RTV sealant around my KN filter. This will help ensure the filter is properly sealed and held in place.
