How many of you guys have experienced detonation (pinging, knocking) after you installed a Stillen Intake or JWT Popcharger on your 5th Gen? What did you do to try to eliminate it? Were you successful?

PS: If you've installed an underhood intake and you have not experienced detonation, try running a simple experiment. Accelerate at WOT to redline two or three times in a row, then accelerate normally. Let me know if your engine detonates at around 2500 rpm.

I had the SI (currently CAI) and have done many 0-60 runs one right after another... no knocking for me.

I don't get it, Kev. You and I both live in CA and I suspect we're both using 92 octane gasoline without gas additives. Yet my car pinged after I installed the SI and yours didn't. Go figure!

Fortunately, the pinging stopped after I reinstalled my stock airbox. Furthermore, with the OSCAI conversion and a K&N Panel Filter, I get about the same response at both partial throttle and WOT as I did with the SI. So I'm really not disappointed that the SI didn't work out. But I guess I should mention to those viewing this thread that SOME risk exists in purchasing an underhood intake. I'm aware of at least one other person (punkdork, to be exact) who experienced detonation after installing a JWT Popcharger.

I don't get it either...

This is only a theory here, not fact is involved:
I drive hard in my car all the time (except now because of the stupid check light) so maybe the ECU stuck me in the aggressive mode and adjusted it's air/fuel mixture to my habits.

If you don't drive hard maybe the ECU doesn't give you more fuel than necessary. So, since you changed the air quantity without the extra fuel in the aggressive mode, your car started to knock.

The above is just a guess, please do not flame me if I'm wrong in any way. Thanks...

OSCAI? IN SEATTLE

You must be crazy punkdork! With all the rain we get here your cold air intake will be sucking up some cold water! I don't know if its worth the risk in this kind of weather. Oh and I am taking in the max for service, alignment, front pillars, and the clutch is making some weird noises. Oh and plus the TSB for the trunk. I don't know if I should take it in for the TSB cuz whenever it goes into the paint shop it comes back with mean overspray. You experience the same thing? Rental?

No, CIRCO, it won't.

There are only two ways you could suck water up through the OSCAI. The first would be if the upper air inlet was blocked. The second would be if both the lower air inlet AND the upper air inlet were submerged. In the former case, the location of the upper air inlet makes it nearly impossible to block off. In the latter case, if the both air inlets are submerged, so are you.

Remember, WATER IS HEAVIER THAN AIR. So long as the upper air inlet is functioning properly, the engine will draw air from that inlet REGARDLESS of the condition of the lower air inlet.

Interesting theory, Kev. But I also tend to drive my car rather aggressively although not as aggressively as you, perhaps.

I've read a couple of threads where people with completely stock intakes had to have all six of their ignition coils replaced in order to stop the pinging at 2500 rpm. I wonder if that's the source of the problem?

Aside from y2kse's response I also have my intake above my splashguard so its not like it gets a lot of access to water. I would think more rain would go in the scoop from driving fast than would ever get sucked up the tube.

Second, they did a half@ssed job on the paint after fixing the truck tsb. You can always say "don't paint over the scratch... :/

Don't feel alone, punkdork. They painted over the scratches on my wife's car. But hers went in to the dealer before mine and I made it perfectly clear that painting over the scratches would be unacceptable on mine. Needless to say, mine came back perfect.

Don't put up with that crap. Take it back to your dealer and make them paint it over. If they give you any grief, open a case with Nissan USA!

Thanks for the support. But I've already got bigger chips on my hood than the little trunk scratch. So I'm not gonna bother. :/ Mabye I should be the only primer grey max in the US

A few of the Sentra guys have done this and got the same results you did. They found out what was causing it. They installed a Valvecase breather filter on there engine, and this caused it to knock for godly knows what reason. If you have one of these, this might be why.

Nope. I haven't installed a breather filter. So that's not it, at least not in my case.
