Ignition Coil TSB

Hi All,

I had my SES light go on and it turned out to be an Ignition Coil TSB. Dealership offered me to replace them for $500 but I refused. My harness is ok.
My question is how many coils are there in total? 6? I have some mechanic friends who claim its actually isnt that hard to do it yourself. Should I replace all 6 coils? I havent been able to find the parts for 2000 and its price, any ideas?

Thanks.
All the info is appreciated.

very easy to do. unplug connector then pull old coil out. replace new coil with lithium grease inside the boot and plug the connector back up. the ones on back bank are harder to get to but its still not a big deal. your best bet on price would be to go through Dave B who is a member here and works at a dealer in TX. his contact info is in the FAQ up at the top. ive heard around 300 for all 6 and i would do all of them so if another is about to go you dont end up having to order and go through the hassle all over again.

lithium grease...??

Is it safe to use lithium grease on ignition systems?
AFAIK you're supposed to use Silicone dielectric tuneup grease... it's a thick silicone-base grease

I have no clue which coils are failing, TSB stated one or more may be failing. Is there a way to determine which one exactly is causing problems?
Are all 6 the same? Would it be ok to purchase only 3 coils and first replace the front bank and then the back bank and see where it causes the problem?

Thanks

The front and rear banks are different. Also, Autozone is now selling some replacement coils for the 2ks. They are $50 a pop, and from what I hear manufactured by the same company that makes the OEM ones.

Autozone sells Wells ignition coils... I dunno if Wells is the OEM provider, but I wouldn't imagine so (wouldn't Nissan source it from some Japanese company?)

I am going to order the coils from Dave B.
But I havent had any luck locating the coils in the engine, no idea where they are. Does anybody know where to look? Any diagrams, schemes, photos?

Thanks.

in your 2k, you should have a red valve cover on the front of the motor that must be removed to see the closest 3 coils. lean back over that location and the other 3 on located on the backside bank. i think you will need a hex to remove the cover. i dont have that kind of cover so im not quite sure.

Yup, you'll need a hex to get the cover off. It is a very very simple process.

Basically, disconnect the connectors on the backs of the coils, remove the bolt holding the coils in place, pull them off the spark plugs, and reverse the order for the new coils.

This guide to changing spark plugs will show you where the coils will be.

Thanks guys, this really helped, I will start working on it right away once I get the parts. One last question though, is silicone dielectric grease really neccessary? Dont quite have anything on hand.

I didn't use any in the connection between my coils and spark plugs the last time I changed my plugs. But since you are putting in brand new coils, it might be a good idea. Autozone is open today and I'm sure they have it.

if you ever have to change a coil or plug again, using the grease will allow much easier removal.

Silicone grease isn't strictly necessary, but it makes it easier to pull the plug on/off, and it seals out water so water can't get in there and produce flashover (short-circuiting the coil to ground)

this goes along with my other post...is there anyway to test these coil packs to see which one is bad?

Thanks on the grease input. I will have to concur with the previos question, is there a way to determine which coil(s) failed? The dealership never told me which coils, just recommended changing all 6, but I think its a marketing trick forcing customers to buy more.

yes there is a way to test them. i would recommend picking up a haynes manual which has this and other valuable information on many repair/replacements.

Hello all,

I just had my ignition coils replaced today by a Nissan dealer (charged me 1.2 + .5 hours labor plus parts = 555.02 before tax, FYI)

I called Nissan North America and they told me that I would have to write in my complaint. So before I write in my letter, I would like to get some signatures going on this ONLINE PETITION!!!

Think I'm gonna have to spring for this soon as well. Was sitting in the car today when it started idling very roughly. Then I got a bit of pinging. Oh well, no RSB, no FSTB. Hello new f'n coils.
