Shriveled Nissan Emblem on Engine
Shriveled Nissan Emblem on Engine
Arghhhhhhhhh.....heat has warped the "chrome" on the Nissan emblem on my engine cover. What are folks doing to repair? I would imagine it will crack and flake soon.
I live in NC...don't think it has to do with a particular region. I've done long drives from NC to Pa but never had any warping of the paint on the emblem until recently...so maybe it is long term.
What is the mileage on others who have this? Mine just hit 25k.

Why don't you just take the engine cover off and leave it off? Some .ORG members have taken the cover off to help with heat build-up, and have said it may have helped a bit with performance.
I took the engine cover off my SE-R this past Thanksgiving just for the heck of it too. The less heat in the engine compartment, the better, I would think.
Peace.

One would think the glue or the engine cover would melt from the heat rather than the plastic finish on the second piece. If it does hold in that much heat....and you remove it...good luck keeping the paint on your hood from bubbling.

Removing the engine cover helps the engine breathe. It will not affect paint on the hood.
As a side note, have you used engine degreaser recently? That will tear the chrome off the Nissan emblem in a second.

I think what 01SE02SER is trying to say is, the conver reflects heat back into the engine. Taking the cover off gives more room for the air to circulate. I don't think it helps the engine "breath" in any way. Just spreads the heat away from the engine.
I could be wrong, but...
Doesn't heat build up when you sit still? Everyone is talking about long drives and no problems, but I think the city traffic in the summer would cause the most problems. I can't see mine ever having a problem. I didn't get that option on my '01 (AE). Personally I would rather see the engine when I opened the hood instead of a piece of plastic. Infiniti, Lexus, etc. cover up some sweet engines these days.

My 2K SE 5spd (bought used) never came with an engine cover... I thought that's just how it was until someone pointed out the threaded holes in the heads/manifold... I figured Nissan had put those holes in there for no reason

Just drill some holes in the cover to help vent the trapped heat from under the cover. Make it look nice though, not just random holes everywhere. If you made the holes over 1/2" you could put screen under the holes to make it look better. Maybe you could cut hole in it that look like gills or something cool like that. The idea is to keep the engine cover on and still not have to worry about the trapped heat.

My emblem is still in good shape (26,000mi), but as soon as I get home in a couple of weeks I'm going to drill holes to hopefully prevent that from happening. I drive in quite a bit of stop and go trafic as well as long distance.
