Stock wheels
Are the 17'' rims on the '00 Maximas not as good as the 16'' rims? They are bigger so I figured better, but are they that much heavier where they slow the car down considerably?
I'd think in terms of handling characteristics they would help the car also.

The "footprint" that 17" wheels have will be bigger than the 16", that's good because that increases the surface area on the pavement. This helps with acceleration, braking and turning in terms of sticking to the ground.
Where it does not help is that bigger tires increase the distance between the center of the wheel and the ground, so it will lower your 0-60 time.
If the problem your having is that you are spinning your tires, 17" 's are for you. I would also not recommend the ponanza's.
Plus if you are planning on getting new rims, get lighter after market rims, if you can find 17" racing rims that look good, that would be your best bet.
I don't know the weight differences between the 16 and the 17 stock, but I'm sure good aftermarkets are lighter.
I think the only reason 16's would be better would be for better miles per gallon.
