HVAC Filter

I was fixing my blower unit under my dashboard and I found a place for a filter in the HVAC system. There was no filter in it and my manual said nothing about a filter. Is there supposed to be one in the car?
Here is a picture of where it looks like it would be slid in.

You can buy one from your Nissan dealer. My 2k2 came with a filter. I don't believe that it was standard on the 2k.

Thanks for the info guys. One more question. Do you feel that the filter is has many benefits, or will I even be able to tell that I put one in?

I believe that the air has a lot less dust and dirt in in when it comes out of the vents. When I first cleaned my filter, there was a lot of pine seeds and things that got trapped by the filter. Had it not been for that, it could have ended up blowing into my eyes and face when I turned on the dash vents full blast.

In addition to stopping dust, the filters are carbon activated...this sort of "purifies" the air. It will definitely make a difference. Hold on to your wallet though...the filter set (2) costs > $50. Check out Courtesy Nissan for discounted pricing. Ed
