Tranny slip / warranty ???

My 2k2 tranny is slipping pretty bad. It's currently at 26.5k miles. I added 4 quarts of synthetic ATF @ 25k miles. Will Nissan give me a problem for adding the synthetic ATF? Should I do a complete tranny flush w/ regular oil before I take it in?

I'm sure you've done this, but first make sure the transmission is not low on fluid. Assuming the fluid level is OK, the slipping you refer to is fairly common with these cars...there's a "sticky" on this forum which highlights the Nissan TSB for this problem. Since dealers are the way they are, I suspect that if you wave a red flag in front of them and advertise that you changed the fluid, they will be quick to blame that as the root cause of your problem. If the fluid you used is Dextron III rated (synthetic or not), it meets Nissan requirements...so there should be no cause to drain/refill with conventional fluids.

My recommendation is that you simply report the problem to your dealer and let them sort it out...in order to refuse to honor the warranty, they would have to prove that the lubricant you used was the direct cause of the problem.

Hope this helps....let me know how you make out.

Don't tell the Nissan dealer you have aftermarket tranny oil. If you do, they may deny a replacement tranny for you. You are under warranty, take it to the dealer.

It's not the oil. AMSOIL ATF surpasses warranty requirements as it meets/exceeds D-III specs. I seriously doubt your servicing dealer will have the oil analyzed to determine if you have serviced it with something other than Nissan-matic D. Many dealers use Brand X fluids in place of the OEM fluids, anyway. I recently serviced an '00 I-30 for a guy and the local Infinity dealer told me to use D-III.

I'm not advising you lie about it, but if you raise the point about servicing the transmission yourself, it raises another issue that you don't need to introduce. Just tell them the problem you're having with it and let them figure it out.

So what you're saying is that we should all leave our cars completely stock, since that's the way they are made.....and since they are not "broke" we shouldn't do anything to them.........this would be a very boring forum if that was the case.

since you are a "master tech", why don't you offer 2k2nyc some constructive advice instead of just telling him he should have left the car stock....

So I assume your car is completely stock, mastertec?

Good advice but I would be very cautious taking advice from NissanMastertec. Often his advice is useless (as witnessed above) and more often than it should be (for an alleged master tech), it's just plain wrong.

See the other thread on "RSB fell off" for more evidence of stupidity.

I know it's not the oil. My tranny was a little off before I added synthetic, but after adding it, the problem became a bit more noticeable.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to flush out the existing oil and replace it with OEM, just to play it safe.

There is no way they can tell if you added different fluid! Unless they have a chemical lab!!! But if your going to do it yourself and want to play it safe go ahead, I just wouldn't spend $100 to have it done.

You guys really need to read the magnusson moss warranty act, again!
http://www.granatellimotorsports.com/magnusonmoss.htm
Basically if a dealer demands you use specfic oil, filters, etc or your warranty is void they have to provide said items free of charge.
As long as what you use meets or exceeds original specs you're good to go.
