how does 2002 auto trans work

This may be a dumb thread but what is the different as far as power distribution to the wheels on the auto and manual. For example, the manual has the limited slip, does the auto? What I'm really getting to is:

In the manual, if your on snow and it is slippery will both tires spin if the wheels slip?

In the auto, if your on snow and it is slippery will both tires spin or just 1?

I'm asking because we had ice about a week ago and my drivers side tire was stuck on the ice at a stop, when I hit the gas the tire just span, the other did not catch. When I had the SpecV this did not happen. I have a 2002 se auto max.

Thanks

This is not caused by having a automatic or manual transmission, it is whether or not you have LSD...To find out more info on LSD click link below. Basically the what LSD does is transfers power to the other wheel (that is why people say both wheels spin tires) when the other one starts to slip...your SpecV probably had LSD.

2k2 auto max's don't have LSD. I know what you mean, I was stuck in a spot once. One tire was on snow, the other one was on ice. I had to have my passenger get out and push.

Nope, not here...but I do have a heated stearing wheel

This may be dumb but does anyone know if thats an option that can be installed. Also, if it's just 1 tire then why the hell are there drive shafts going to both of the wheels?

its an open differential, not locked. whatever tire will rotate easier, it will.
its not that power is always going to one tire, on dry pavement power usually is distributed rather evenly.
on a car with an LSD the differental will lock when it detects one tire is slipping. thus distributing power to both wheels.

It can be installed if you want to spend a lot of paper for parts and labor. the ABS actuator is different so you're looking at major $$$ just for that one item. There is also different brake line plumbing among other things.
