For those of you with tints...
The search isn't working too well for me, so mabye u guys can help me out. I have an appointment on thursday to get tints put on. Since my car is Super Black and i'm worried about cops (although cops don't really bother you around here) I dont want to black out the windows. If I want the windows to have visible tint (kinda a smoked look) but not too black, what % should i get? i was thinking 35% but i'm not sure if it will be too dark. Also, I was thinking of telling them to stop the tint at the dot-matrix pattern. Good idea?
Does anyone have the same concept as me about not completely blacking out the windows of black cars?
Also, what are your opinions on blacking out the chrome trim? think it would look better?
Thanks guys!

Depends...
You should check with your local laws if you're interested in keeping it legal, but (and I could be wrong on this) I've never heard of a state with a limit (on side and back windows) lighter than 35% (which is pretty light if you're going with smoke). At 35%, you can definitely see into the car fairly clearly in most lighting situations, so it's not what you'd want if you're looking for privacy.
As far as handling the matrix - I had the tint stopped before it on my old 200SX, but it drove me nuts having so much light (compared to the 20% mirror) come in through that area, so I had the matrix blacked out on the outside of the glass. That seemed to work fairly well. The matrix on my 2K max is different, though. Instead of bumps, it's mostly flat with holes punched in it. The guy who tints for me sanded it lightly and tinted over it. It looks fine to me from inside and because it's mirror, it looks great from the outside.
This has been my experience, but I'm no expert. Hope it helps.

i have 20% all the around my car and it is fairly dark which is what i wanted. if you just want a smoky look i would go with either 35% or 50%,keep in mind that if you have the sunroof as i do if the shade is open it will look lighter and darker when closed.
as for the dots on the back window i just had them tint over it because i didnt want the light comming in. it doesnt look bad it just requires a little more work to seat it down good, if the person tinting your windows is any good at it he shouldnt have any problem.

Well I do want black tint, but I'm saying I don't want to *Black out* the windows. I want like a dark smoked look.
Does anyone have any black Max's with 35% tint they can post a picture of??
Does anyone have any opinions on blacking out the chrome window trim?

Yeah I suppose I'll go with the 35%.. 50% will probably be too light. I just wish I had a picture to see before i go ahead and get it done. If the sunroof shade varies the light, should I get the sunroof glass tinted as well? So I could keep the shade open and not get flooded with light From the top, or is getting the sunroof glass tinted uncommon and generally not done?
Tinting
I have a SuperBlack Maxima w/ black leather interior. I was told by my tint guy last summer, when I got it tinted, that any tinting done on 2000 or later model cars is illegal. He also told me that the windows are factory tinted with about 70% already (on the 2000 model). I think the 2001 SE AE is tinted a bit darker. I decided on 50%, because you'd barely see a difference with another layer of 70% thrown over it. I also got the lifetime tint, which is warrantied against ever fading. Cheap tints fade to purple, but lifetime tint has a metal component in it that prevents fading over time. The darkest lifetime tint is 50%. Since it's metal, it also has some mirror properties, making it difficult to see down into the car, if the lights are out at night, with a black interior. It also blocks out more heat from the sun than the limo tint does, but not more light. I paid $255 for the back window, front doors, and rear doors (including the small window piece). They don't normally tint the sunroof, but I'm sure they will for a price. You probably don't need it done unless you use the tilt sunroof feature a lot. Also, as noted by the other replies, they should sand the factory tint dot matrix down to provide a better mounting surface, if they know what they're doing. The dot matrix is almost exactly equal to the rear tint, if you go with the 50% lifetime. I can't notice a difference. Just ask to see the two tints side-by-side to be sure, usually they'll have their own rides already tinted to give you a point of reference. Good luck.
i asked the guy who tinted my windows about tinting the
sunroof and he said he could do it but he wouldnt reccomend
it because that area takes a lot of abuse from the sun and
it might not hold up. i am not sure where you live but i live in mississippi and it gets pretty hot here. i only paid
$125 to have mine tinted and i had quotes as high as $175.
$255 sounds really high but it could be to the fact of where
he lives. i havent heard anything here about tint being legal on 2000 and up models.
just have the gou hold some up on your window and go with the one you feel looks best.
good luck!

I know this is the 5th gen forum but here is a pic of a 4th gen Maxima that I really like. It is someones on this board, sorry I dont know who. Whoever you are I love your car and hope mine looks like it one day. What tint do you have? According to http://www.tintdude.com I can only tint everything 32%. Or anyone else, what percentage is on this car? Thanks.
AM, who listens to AM? ;-)
As for the laws, up here in Quebec it is illegal to put tints on the front windows (driver/passenger), unless it is factory installed. A load of crap that no-one ever gets stopped for.
My Max came with something like 20% or so all around (except the windsheild of course).

Platinum Plus Tint
Dude, I have a super black/black leather max. Previously I had two max's before, with dark smoke tint, and I think its old school now....Get yourself some really nice PLATINUM metallic tint, I've never got complemented so much like now, and people always come up to me asking where did I get it tinted and what kinda tint I got. Make your car look more expensive that it is...
