Exhaust Options

I have a 2000 SE 5spd and want to start modding. I do not want to add an aftermarket catback exhaust because I don't want my car sounding like everyone's Honda Civic with a buzz bomb fart can. So here is my question...

Would replacing the mid-pipe with a higher flowing one make the stock exhaust louder, or would it stay the same? Would this give me any more power, or is there no sense of adding an aftermarket mid-pipe since I don't plan on buying an aftermarket catback?

wrong forum buddy, you are a 5th gen. And maximas don't sound like **** (civics) with exhaust on, they got a decent muscle sound to it. But I would ask in 5th gen forum about your car.

Buy a resonated b-pipe (midpipe) and leave the muffler alone. This will add a few (1-3) hp without increasing noise much. I suggest a flowmaster 50 series. I have it on my car (no bpipe yet though) and it sounds amazing.

Any definitive data on which is better: a y pipe or a b pipe

My impression from reading the forum was that a y pipe and an intake were the two best initial mods for creating power (rumors of 15-25 whp). I also got the idea that neither one changes the sound too much. Would a b + y pipe combo add anything significant in terms of power?

if you buy a high quality cat back, like the greddy, youll have yourself a mean sounding car. not a bumblebee.

if i were u, i would save little more money and get Greddy EVO catback. they look good, sound good, and definitely give u that extra power u need.

I got catback Greddy. Definitely not as loud as Civic. It has a nice deep tone to it. If you do not want any exhaust noise though, stay away from any aftermarket exhaust system.

The biggest change in noise for me occurred when I put my WSP y-pipe on. At that time I had a modified stock intake. Then I put on a Berk Intake, a little louder, you could hear the whoosh of the intake a bit more, you know that tsssst you hear when you tap the gas. Then I put on the WSP B-pipe w/o resonator and I could begin to hear a rumble, low drone at highway cruising RPM, which for me is not in the least bit annoying, and at high RPM's the sound became very spirited. I am leaving it alone as is w/ stock muffler, it's plenty loud and muffler mod won't improve horsepower.

That sounds like the sound profile I want. Not obviously louder, but a bit deeper with a bit of a rumble. I would prefer that (for sound and money reasons) over a catback system. However, go where this power is.

Is there any consensus (or heaven forbid, data) to show the power differences between lets say the Greddy Evo catback compared to a y+b pipe combo? Assuming both have a non-stock intake, of course...

i think the piping is a little different on the 3.5 because a y-pipe for a 2k wont fit on a 3.5. (i think)?
