Ski / Snowboard roof rack for my Max?? Need advice...
I need to buy a decent snowboard roof rack for my car. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, as long as it is easy to install and can fit two snowboards safely.
Before i buy, i wanted to ask you ... is the installation of such thing on our cars as easy as it is on any other car or my '03 Maxima would require a special rack and mounting kit. I really don't have much experience with roof racks and i don't want to purchase the wrong thing. Anything special about the installation considering that our doors close very close to the edge of the roof?
If any of you has a ski rack installed - what brand/model are you using and where is a good place to buy it?
Thanks a lot!

hey
hey, i have the "THULE" rack on my 2K2... there are other brands.. you have to buy the basic rack that fits your car... then you have to buy the attachment you want, i.e.: ski rack... this can get pricey... mine cost me about $700 canadian dollars, this included the rack for my car, and the roof "box" .. i travel alot.. good luck.
PS: i choose the THULE brand cause they have been making these racks for a long time, their quality is very good.. ofcourse this cost me a pretty penny... worth it though, i don't worry about my roof rack when i'm traveling, even when there's a strong cross wind.
--the instalation is simple... for me the hard part is just adjusting it so that the clamps go on the right spot.... there are rubber padding on the "feet" so as not to scratch the paint. you might notice a slight discoloration where the "feet" clamp on to the roof if you leave it on for a while... the doors will close if installed properly. good luck.

Thule is a fine, fine quality brand.
Yakima is another, with a minor advantage of round cross bars, which at one time helped with the mounting of both the support brackets and whatever components you were putting on top.
I've held off getting new towers for my rack, since I haven't used my Yakima in years (has rain gutter towers right now from my old van) and I am considering instead the trailerhitch style rack for bikes and skis.

I'll sell you my Q Towers, You would have to buy the Q clips for your car and the bars...It was on my Accord, now going to the Jeep:

I have the Thule system on mine and it looks great in my opinion. I also have Thules new wind deflector which looks great as well. Just be sure you apply 3M cleartape to the roof surface and also protect the contact points of the deflector. I used this process on my 94 Altima and had no paint issues after 8 years of use.
I'll try and post pics next week if your really interested?

I have a Thule rack (on its third car).....Thule/Yakima racks are good if you want to have utility for multiple attachments (ski/sb racks, bike racks, cargo box, kayak racks, etc....also great for carrying up to 150lbs of lumber from Home depot
)
If you buy one of those two, I suggest Thule over Yakima. I work at a ski shop (weekends) and have seen that Yakima components have a tendancy to rust after 2-3 years if they are on the car all the time......Thule stuff rarely seems to have the problem. They are about the same price, too.
that said, as mentioned above the yaki racks have round bars which are slightly easier to work with and are slightly stronger if you carry any heavy loads.....
OR.....if you are looking for just racks for ski/snb., and not a whole "component kit" you could probably use a Barrecrafters SX-11 with whatever fit clip you need...they run about 120$$ and are only for skis/snowboards...do not leave a barrecrafters rack on when not using it....by the way. PM me if you need more info, Our shop sells Thule, Yakima, and Barrecrafters so I know a good deal about them....
