I have had good results with these filters in two other cars (actually trucks). I like the increaesd breathability, "perceived" HP increase, and "perceived" gas mileage improvement. Who knows, maybe it was in my head!

One thing for sure...I did notice an increase in engine noise, with the added breathability.

Can any of you folks recommend this filter for the Max? I am interested to know pluses and minuses.

My main interest is gas mileage and HP. Please advise. Thanks!

i got the drop in panel K&N first, but eventually ended up getting the stillen hi-flow intake which is pretty much a K&N cone. i like it much better. the acceleration seems much better w/ the cone, but felt nothing w/ the drop in K&N. there is a slight noise increae, but not much under normal driving .. surely on WOT, although i don't thinkg it's as lowed as some of the 4th gen's i've heard.

gas mileage? i won't know since i don't drive like a 'normal' person

I tried the Stillen Intake (K&N cone filter) and went back to a modified stock setup. I use a K&N panel filter in combination with the OSCAI conversion. My butt dyno tells me that there's virtually no difference in performance between the OSCAI/K&N and the Stillen Intake. (If anything, my midrange performance has improved with the OSCAI/K&N.) And the modified stock setup is a fraction of the cost of the Stillen Intake.

If you want more info, wolfmax, do a search on "OSCAI".

Did any of you read this month's Import Tuner Magazine where they tested the K&N replacement airfilter for 2k max, it had surprised gain of 4hp to the wheel, 4.4 hp with no filter at all....this is like the second magazine i have read that says K&N drop in on 2k max does REAlly increase 4hp to the wheel...the firt one was Turbo Mag!!!!

But how come I hardly notice the HP????

I got an Amsoil drop-in and it's supposed to be better than the K&N. I noticed a little difference in breathability after the install. The filter cost me like thirty something dollars and the part no. is TS74. It looks well made also.

Sweet car pic!

You mentioned the improvement in breathability. Did it makes the engine louder? How about effects on gas mileage and power? Thanks!

The increase in engine loudness is barely noticeable with a K&N panel filter. The only time you might hear a bit more loudness is during wide open throttle.

If you opt to do the OSCAI conversion, you will hear a little more loudness during engine idle. Once again, however, it's barely noticeable.

Such is the price one has to pay for glory!

You won't notice much of a difference in mileage . . . perhaps an extra 1 or 2 mpg. But that's usually offset by slamming the accelerator to the floorboard every time you get a chance!

K & N Filter

Just put in the panel on a 2k SE. Improvements are too subtle to judge at first. Seems to accelerate a little
stronger.
Recent TV show "Horse Power" on TNN. They added the K&N
cone filter (to a 94 LT1 Camero with 120k Miles) and got a 4% increase in rear wheel HP on a dyno. So for the panel type, maybe 2-3% is realistic.
Thats 4.5 to 6.6 HP. Not bad for $45 and no more Fram filters at $10 a pop.

I'll put in in as soon as the breakin period is over and try and do a before/after analysis. Obviously, it's a small change.

BTW...My majestic blue is going to require lots of carwashes. After 4 days, it needs one bad. It hasn't even rained or snowed since I've had it. Actually, since spring is coming, the car washes are not a bad thing. A chance to get outside and hear the chirping birds!

Amsoil filter sucked

well i put it in a couple of day's ago and finally tested it out today going to work. Manoman my car was starving for air(i could'nt believe it)and stumbling a little during acceleration(WTF). So when i got home tonight i threw the stocker back in and awwwwwww the power was back. So i wrote amsoil an e-mail telling them their filter sucks and hopefully they'll give me a refund. I tried to blow air through this thing with an air hose and barely got any to go through it.

P.S. where's the best place to buy a K&N panel filter?

Re: K & N Filter

I've used K & N drop in filters in two of my previous vehicles (Honda Civic and Nissan Altima) as well as the 2000 Maxima I own now. Unfortunately, I opting to go back to the stock filter. It appears that the K & N allows quite a bit of dirt to pass through it. In addition, the oil from the filter seems to get sucked off the filter and into the throttle body. I had to get the throttle body cleaned on my Altima because the accelerator pedal started sticking. I had the K & N in the Altima for about 30,000 miles before this problem developed. I've run the K & N in my Maxima for a couple of months. I pulled the filter and checked the box and metal screen on the "clean" side of the filter and found dirt (and some oil residue) in this area.

The other problem that seemed to go away was the throttle "hiccup" others have complained about. On cold mornings, with the K & N the car would jerk and surge until it warmed up. By the way, I have a 5 speed. I haven't had this problem with the stock filter.

I've thought about trying the Amsoil filter but I'm not convinced that it will run any cleaner.

I will have to admit, though, the Maxima does feel more responsive and quicker with the K & N filter installed.

i started with the drop in right after i got the car and couldnt really notice much of a difference in performance or gas milege,i just installed an oscai and that made all the difference. it seems to have faster throttle response and better acceleration at midrange. as far as the gas milege goes it probably would be better but i cant seem to keep my foot out of it now. i would deffinately reccommend the k&n/oscai combo.
