Anyone get a ticket for clearing HIDs?

I'm considering clearing my HIDs out (the orange blinker light in the headlight housing) but am curious if anyone has gotten a ticket after clearing theirs out. I know tickets are fairly common with clear sidemarkers, so I figure cleared blinkers are likely getting ticketed once in awhile too (since they're supposed to be amber legally). It sure would suck having to open your lens back up to put the amber lens back in!

Anyone?

you cant get a ticket for clearing out the lens as long as you put a amber blinking bulb back in there. i bought a bulb that is silver but blinks amber/orange. its perfectly legal.

Point taken - But from what I've seen most guys are running clear bulbs. What bulb are you using?

No.....Why would you get a ticket for cleared blinker lights. Just put an amber bulb and you'll have no problems at all.

BTW the 2001 maximas don't have an orange blinker on the headlights. It's all clear with just an amber bulb.......

Red, that's not the correct part number. For 2000-2001, they use 1156/1157. For 2002-2003, the front and rear share the same part number: 7440.

if you notice, BLKMAX005SPD has 2002 HIDS and I do as well. Therefore, I posted the CORRECT bulbs that are needed for the 2002 HIDs since this thread was started for clearing the 2002 HIDS. Also, as I am sure you aware that you cant clear 2000 lights since they are already clear, and there was no point for me in stating which bulbs to use for the 2000 lights. If you want to be more precise, then you should have said that the 1157 is for the front while the 1156 is for the rear.

once you click on the auction, it will tell you in big letters to specify which color you want when you send the payment since you can choose from about 5 different colors.

it's either in the tutorials here or on vqpower.com

cliffnotes of it is that you bake it open, remove the small round amber piece, and cut a piece of clear material from like a home depot garden light or something to fit, and put it in instead.

You are incorrect. DOT regulations state that you can not change the color of the housing of lights on the outside of a vehicle from stock, which includes clearing the lenses and putting in amber bulbs. It's a federal regulation.
Any sites that offer clear lenses when they should be amber/red/whatever that are DOT approved are lying.
There was a big discussion on this site a couple years ago about that, and someone finally looked up the regulation.
Most places won't give you a ticket for it, unless they had a bug up their ***, or it's in a place like the Berlin Turnpike in Connecticut, where everybody and their momma goes to street race, and the cops drive tricked out cars with systems and bling
With all that being said, I think cleared lenses and colored bulbs look soooo much better than colored lenses, and I plan on getting some myself

Well, that's the whole thing that you can't modify your lighting at all.

I believe DOT specifies red rear and amber front retro-reflectors that are lit at night. Parking lights don't need to be amber lensed, or even amber (turn signals do, and in most cars it's the same bulb), but you're still illegally modifying your headlights. If they came in a DOT-compliant clear housing, you'd be in business, as long as your retroreflectors are amber up front and red out back (the sidemarkers on the 5th gen, and the smaller bumper light/the 1" red patch next to the rear turn signal on the 4th gen) AFAIK, clear bumper lights (the curved part only) and red/clear tails are fine, as long as they have red/amber retroreflectors that light up.

You do realize that someone resurrected this thread after almost six years, that has incorrect information in it that pertains to their question, right?
Nalc - If I remember correctly, red/clear tails are not legal, because the original color of the lense is red/amber.
If a car comes with cleared out lenses and colored bulbs from the factory, that's fine. But you can't put red lenses and white bulbs on that car, and vice versa.
There was a bit of a controversy over that same question, and I do remember that back in '02-'03, some of our forum members from Ct had an issue where the police made them swap out their clear tails/lenses back to stock on their way to one of the meets we set up.

Were those all clear tails, or red/clear where the brakes were a standard clear bulb with a red lens and the turn signals were a clear lens with an amber bulb?

Because the all-clears are definitely not legal... I can't see how they would have an issue with aftermarket red/clears tho... the retroreflectors are the correct color, and they haven't been modified, and IIRC they are stamped with DOT approved or SAE approved.

Yeah, that was the controversy over it. They were red/clear tails that he cleared himself (Gotta love the Easy-Bake method!).
I am *pretty* sure (hence I could be wrong) that the statute reads that the lens color couldn't be modified from stock (Kinda like that silly law in Maine that you can't modify the *sound* of the exhaust from stock).
Unfortunately, I don't have time to go searching for it, since I'm at work trying to stay under the radar

pbn - Thank you for that, I didn't feel like pointing it out

Ok, I found the thread I was talking about (It was bothering me!). I didn't skim through the whole thing, and it's 8 years old so the navigation to reach the statute is out-dated, but I'm sure someone with more free time than I can find out how to pull up a more recent reference (The second post has a *TON* of info):

I freakin hate my home-depot! Here in Montreal they do not carry the mailbu lense to replace the amber one, only the Home-Depot in the states do and its soooooo nice replacing it with that lense rather then leave it with just nothing. Anyone wanna pick one up for me and ship it to me obviously i will pay for the expenses.
