They're charging 50 bones for an oil change these days? What happened to the $20 Quick lubes?

I change my own oil all the time. I use Pennzoil 5w30 which is the grade recommended by Nissan for all temperatures. If the weather is really cold there, then it is the only weight recommended. I also use Pennzoil oil filter. For the 2000 Max, I think the oil filter number ends in 109.

Draining the oil is pretty easy. The only tough part is removing the oil filter which is under a cover behind the right wheel. Jacking the car up does not help because the suspension extends and makes it even harder to reach the filter. Just park the car on a flat surface and reach underneath with a plier type filter remover. You'll get the hang of it after a couple of oil changes. Also, look in your manual for the oil capacity w/filter change. For the 2000, it is 4.25 quarts but for your 3.5 liter, it may be more. Good luck.

$50? Thats crazy.

Buy any 5w30. Theyre all the same. Change it every 3-4K miles. Chould cost less than $10 to do yourself. BUT Warm the engine before you change so the contaminants and sediment gets suspended in the old oil and doesn't sit at the bottom of the oil pan.

I used to have a 88 Maxima and I remember how hard it was to get to the filter that's way I have been paying to get it done, it was a pain. But $50.00 for a all synthetic oil is just throughing away my money.

Nothing wrong w/ Penzoil. I've used Penzoil for many many years on my other cars; over 250,000 miles.

Most Nissan dealers are charging $24.00 for the oil change, I assumed it was a national thing since my coupons for it were mailed to me from Nissan. Most dealers even have a 30 minute garantee for this service.

I think most of our local lube shops charge around $50 for a synthetic oil change.

For an O2, though, if you've got a dry, safe place to work, do it yourself. Will take you 30 minutes, if you're not trying to rush it.

4.25 quarts in an 02. Mobil 1 M-105 filter, even though it looks way too big. Pour an extra 8 oz of oil through the engine before you put the plug back in , and 'wash' out every bit of old oil you can.

$50 bucks, that's nuts, unless it's a friggin BMW or M-B dealer changing the oil on those cars.......But it's a MAXIMA for love of god......I wouldn't shell that much for it, Synethic....I don't see the use unless you have over 100k miles on your car.

$50.00 for an oil change is
They might as well ask you to bend over while they're at it.

Anyway see the fluids and lubricants forum. Lots of info there.

Me? Castrol GTX 5w30 and Bosch 3323 filter (which I just found out is crap in since they are now being made in Mexico. Maybe my local autozone still has a few of the "good ones" left, so I can ****** 'em up. Don't want to pay $10+ for an oil filter. That's just me.)

That is where I bought my first 02 Maxima, but I totaled that one and got the second one from Fergus in Skokie. Good looks on the oil change from Star Nissan, I will save a lot of $$$$$$$

Thanks for the suggestion. So do the 02-03 hold about 4.5 quarts? I think someone wrote that. Is that right?

Not for synthetic though I do Mobil 1 5w-30 (all seasons), with an OEM filter and the oil is just over 4 quarts. I've never found mobil 1 syn for much less than about $4.80 quart. The OEM filter costs $6-7, so you're looking at $26 to do it yourself.

I plan on keeping my 00 maxima for a long time (I don't have new car fever like most people), and that combined with the extended drain interval of synthetics make the purchase well worth it to me. I say extended drain, but in fact I err on the side of caution and change my oil every 5k miles (I combine city and highway fairly evenly). Many wouild say that's overkill (and the oil companies would say it's under, but who cares about them!) though.

I jack the car up, but I've also used ramps. In both cases I find that getting to the filter is honestly very easy. I merely bend that plastic shield enough to get my ratched and oil-socket in place, and a few twists and I'm good. $50 for an oil change is, as mentioned above, utter lunacy.

You can buy Mobil One in 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart for under $20. They look like this:

I've heard questionable things about Fram filters, desperado. I do use one sometimes in my 93 sentra, but with my Maxima I feel it's worth the piece of mind to use an OEM filter.

hope you've got a heated garage if you plan on changing oil in this weather. i've done it, and it's no walk in the park for something so easy and routine.

Yeah, gotta love pouring motor oil all over the fuel rail covers on the LS1. I used to have a 98 Z28 and it was a ***** to fill it with oil. I always ended up pouring it over the valve covers. At least this guy has the fuel rail covers so he can just wipe it off...
