hey everyone, i am thinking about buying a new subwoofer for ma 2k auto gle without having to buy anything else but da sub. i am wondering what specs i need to know in order to buy a new one that i can just switch with the factory sub if possible and what would be the greatest wattage sub i can get just doing that???

i really wouldn't recomend it and i doubt you could even do that. the amp for the stock sub is under the sub in that lil plastic basket. you might as well get a powered sub in a tube, they're cheap.. prolly go kickers or something. but keep in mind, once u get a lil bass u want more and then u gotta dish out twice the money just to get what u want.. because most likely no one would want to buy the old set up, or at least not for the price you hope to sell it for.. so my advice is save up and get teh best the first time rather than spending twice the money buying somethign that's not as great plus what u want in the future..
I hate when car audio questions come up in the forums. I am a car audio freak and I have to post my 2cents. I am so happy that I didn't get the Bose system. I plan on replacing the receiver and the door speakers, installing back dash speakers and a sub, and rewire the entire system. I will be pushing everything with two Autotek Mx-250 amplifiers. As far as subwoofer choice I am very particular. The JLaudio subs are accurate but not as loud and deep as I would like. The Cerwin Vega Vega series are not as accurate but extremely loud and deep.
Whatever you do, DO NOT SETTLE. This will be my 4th setup and I learned the hard way. My first setup was a cheap 12" MTX sub and Profile amplifier. I quickly noticed that it sounded like ****. After replacing components several times and upgrading I have a Autotek 66 (claims 66watts but puts out 260 when bridged) and a Vega 124 with a custom built box and it rocks. Remember the smaller the setup, the less impact it will have on your system, and using cheap components will affect sound quality drastically.

To each his/her own . . .
My 2K SE came equipped with the stock Premier Sound System. I opted to install an 8" Kicker Subwoofer in a custom box attached to the underside of the rear shelf. If you look under the shelf, you'll notice a cutout for the subwoofer. You can install it there without cutting anything except the shelf material.
I'm using an inexpensive bridged 160W Boss Amp to drive the sub (approx. 75W RMS). The Amp is installed under the front seat. I also installed dynamat on the rear shelf to reduce vibrations.
My objective was not to get MORE bass, it was to get deeper and more accurate bass. I've accomplished my objectives at very little cost. I'm not saying that it sounds like a Bose system or an aftermarket system based on separate amps, speakers, etc. But it's good enough for me.

hmm...well i do want more bass, cause i have been lookin at subwoofers lately, my frined ownes a 99 trans am w/ ram air, and he was thinking about buying a 1000W woofer for it. and looking a bit with him i decided later on i would want a new once since i noticed the boss system already installed is not that great. danks for da advice so far, everything has been taken into consideration! any more opinions would be nice.. thanks
