Reading the code "Check WALLET Light"

I imagine there are a number of threads on this Check Engine Light question. I tried looking for a thread but found the 'handy???' SEARCH button turned off! I went to STICKY's threads but only found a thread for 2002-3 Maximas. I have a 2001. Does the same procedure work for a 2001? Are there any easier readouts? I have read, that for a 1998 Max, there is a screw to reset the ECU, is there a screw for the 2001? I am assuming that my 'check wallet light' is on for aleast 1 of the O2 sensors, but being 2 months over warranty, I'm not keen on changing all of them!
thanks, Sandy

Just go to Advance (or Autozone...I never remember which it is) and have them pull your code for free. They will be able to tell you what the problem is, and at least reccommend where to get the part.

i just pulled 0140, which is one that is mentioned in the O2 tsb. i am just barely out of my 3yr/36k warranty but i am hoping i can get it covered under the extended warranty. if you got one of the o2 sensor codes then you could replace the sensors yourself but it still needs a ecm update from the consult 2 which only nissan has. good luck and let us know what autozone pulls. all 5th gens pull codes the same way and dont have the screw and led on the ecu.

Well, unfortunately, there are NO Autozones in Canada! I am aware of a O2 TSB the needs to reprogram/update the ECU. A year ago, an O2 sensor was replaced, I believe, one of the 'lower' ones but the dealer did not update the ECU. I was reading somewhere, that if 1 needs replacing, then they all should be replaced! Kind of pricey! Does the dealer charge for this update re-program? ...if I quote the TSB?

Sensors and all that are by law covered under the Emissions equipment warranty....dont let the dealer get you for that...

That is not true; I found it quite impossible to get my bad O2 sensor replaced when my car was still well within emissions. I called two different Nissan dealerships and asked. I may have even asked somebody at Nissan customer service.

BTW there is no need to change all sensors if one goes! I had one go at 38k miles. I'm at 64k now and no problems since. I got the code pulled at autozone and switched out the sensor myself. You need just an O2 sensor socket, and as much torque (ie, longest handle possible) as you can get to the socket to unscrew the sensor.

i was unaware they considered an O2 to be under that federally mandated warranty. i set up an appt for next monday so we will see what they say. they know ive got an extended warranty and a hard copy of the tsb. as for just one O2 going bad, the tsb as of July of 03 says to replace both rear sensors bank 1 & 2 along with ecu update. an earlier version may have recommended just one but the new states both should be replaced.

Nope. Only the ECU and catalytic converter are covered. Check your warranty book and you'll see 02 sensors are only covered by the 3/36 warranty.
