Newb to ‘Max modding’ here (over from the Mustang world FYI). I have a 2k2 GLE that I am preparing a mod list for, with springs at the top of the list. I am leaning towards H&R Sport’s, Tein H-Tech’s or Progress right now, in that order.

I won’t be doing shocks at this time, and am looking for a moddest drop with little ride quality sacrifices, and improvements on handling. Eventually will also upgrade my wheels (to 19’s), and will probably do the shocks at the same time.

I’ just spent the last few days researching springs (including all 15 pages of this helpful thread). Would the stock GLE suspension support the moddest drop of the springs listed above (H&R Sport, Tein H-Tech or Progress)? Or should I just wait and do the whole suspension setup at the same time? I’d like a little bit of a drop now to kick off the modding right.

Thanks,

~Josh

<EDIT> Disregard – I went with the Tein H-Tech’s – we’ll see how it goes…

I've got Tein H-tech's ready to go on with new rims and tires so wish me luck. I'll post pics when it's all done. I chose the h-techs because I didn't want too much of a drop but wanted a lower look. I went from 17's to 18's on the rims. I hope I like the look..... I'd better because it's too late now...

i want to lower my car, but i am not sure if i will be able to clear the curb on my driveway and there are a ton of bumpy back roads in PA. what do you guys think would be good for my situation?

btw i think the curb is about 2 inches off the road and then it becomes steep when you pull up the driveway.

thanks

Hi, I was wondering how easy it is to install a pair of tein springs on stock struts and if there was any risk involved? Also what tools would be needed?

very easy, a jack, socket set, dont know the exact sizes, and a spring compressor. not sure if s-techs are to low for the stock struts or not? you may have to cut the bump stops with those, with my h-techs and stock struts i ahve had no problems

There is ALWAYS a degree of risk involved when working with suspension coil springs. When compressed there is energy stored that you do not want to suddenly release. A quality coil spring compressor is normally part of the equipment necessary. And I'll STRONGLY recommend that an additional safety measure be taken (a substantial chain or cable securely wrapped around one or more of the coils and a sturdy chassis member comes to mind).

Just to put this in perspective, a 300 lb/in spring under only one inch of compression will jump off the seat at 10g or more if suddenly permitted to do so. With that level of acceleration it could reach you in less than 0.25 seconds, so don't expect to be able to duck in time if it does head your way.

Norm.

Here's a pic taken today of mine with the H-techs;. It actually sits a bit lower in the front, but I'm on a bit of a hill so it looks higher in this pic

This thread has so much information and opionions.
Im shopping for a new suspension so ive read everypage.

the first few pages it seemed like i was going to go with ebiach then i was leaning towards progress.

towards the middles pages i wanted h&r's.

last couple of pages makes me want to get h-techs.

So right now i think i want h-tech's with tokicos adj's

WOW, it seems like the Org's collective minds change on a daily basis. lol
Sometime back it was all about S-Techs, Then H-Techs. Now it seems that most are getting on the Eibach gravy train. Wish I had money to have a colelction like some folks around here

Well thats cause recent reviews of the Eibachs have dispelled the myth that they ride hard.

I put my Eibachs on about a month ago because I got them used for a really good price. I figured they would be too hard but to my amazement they rode really nicely and performed well, so I let Irish know because he was looking for a high performance spring that also rode well and he ended up going for them and also had only positive things to say about them. Because Irish is so well respected on the Org I really think his review helped dispell the Eibachs = hard ride, myth which was the reason most people hadent tried them.

My suspicion is that Eibachs for 4th and 5th gen are very similar, and the 4th and 5th gen Maximas are very similar, except the 5th gen chassis is stiffer so the stiff Eibachs might not seem so rough...needless to say, I'm going to switch from H-Techs to Eibachs since the H-Techs seem to bottom out easily, although they are pretty comfy for the most part.

Are you on stock shocks? My car rides kind of rough with the Progress springs on the front. That's with stock shocks. Maybe because I am on 40 series tires. I agree with you on the lowering though. It drops the car perfectly.

That has to be the strangest word usage I've seen in quite a while (without whazzz's post in the meantime I still wouldn't know for sure what it was that you meant).

Fell is what you did yesterday when you lost your balance.

'Drop' is a far more widely understood term with respect to changes in vehicle ride height, with understanding on the part of the reader/listener being the whole point of communication.

Actually, I really would be interested in your definition of a perfect ride. Since no two people are likely to completely agree on this, I'm wondering what various people think. Call it part of a very informal and occasional poll that might help me respond to ride-oriented questions in the future.

Just lowered my 2000 maxima with progress springs and stock struts. I'm riding on 19's and the ride is still quite smooth. Very impressed with the handling for being on stock shocks. Very little body roll. I am very happy with the ride quality (last car was a civic coupe on eibach sportlines with stock shocks which was much much harsher). Hope this helps. I would post pics but am not sure how.

I wanna go with the H-Tech springs, cuz it looks like a good drop, and i'm not rallying or nothing.. But what shocks do they go best with?

I had Progress springs with Tokico HPs and compared to the Progress/Illumina combination, I thought it was a much poorer ride and handling wasn't as good with the HPs, so I'd imagine it would be as bad or worse with stock struts.

IMO, something adjustable.
