installing springs (rant) How much should it cost?

I've had 2 places now tell me "the computer says it's 4 hours for the front and 2 for the back so it's about $350 to install new springs."

$350 ?!?!?! Is that right?

holy crap...that is wayyyyyy to much. i installed my springs and it took me about 3 hours. i know of multiple places in houston that will install for $150.00. do not go to a regular place like mieneke. go to a performance shop. they usually cut you a brake for stupid labor like that. stupid was in reference to mind numbing labor that can only be done with a certain tool.

You should wait until you by shocks and install them together. that way you can just bring that shocks and springs to the shop and ask them to assemble them. after that all you need to do is put your car on some jacks and loosend about 5 screws per spring/shock assembly.

your best bet is to get a few buddies to help. I have switched my setup twice and did it myself the second time with the help of a friend. Before that I had never done a suspension install and watched only once. It took a while approx 4 hours but we ran into a few problems plus we were working on jack stands which makes it a little more difficult.

both of these places are local (not chain shops)... I told the first guy to blow me. I thought the second guy (I sorta know him, he does all my inspections and oil changes on the wife's car) would give me a deal.

I'm not doing it myself. I guess I'll wait and get struts at the same time ... this sucks.

I've never done it or seen it done, and I don't have the tools... I will not be doing this by myself. I'd help a friend who'd done it before but this isn't something I'm going to try on my own.

I have a few mechanic friends... I'll start bribing them with beer (and cash, I'm willing to pay but not $350)

I got REAMED for $400 bucks for my Eibach/Koni install, HOWEVER they did have to cut the front struts and reassemble them. That is something that I will leave to someone who has experience and the proper tools. It was Big10 Tires in Kennesaw that did it for me, and they have done stuff from me before and I trust them. Sort of a toss up. I would have like to save money, but then I would like to know I can trust what was done. Plus their tire prices are the SAME as TireRack without the shipping.

Like everyone else said, thats insane. I did mine for $10..just needed to rent a spring compressor. You should try to do it yourself. All you really need is an impact gun. I always thought suspension installs were hard, i think it took me like 2.5 to 3 hrs. the rears are a bit ch, have a buddy with small hands!

350 is a rip...
if you have the right tools like me..you can do it for free..
but i would find anthor place man..
find a privately owned place and say you will pay cash for it...maybe they will do it cheaper
when i say cash i mean bills...

I'll be swapping out my springs and struts this weekend. I'm going to do this myself. Is there anything else needed besides nuts, ratchets, spring compressor, springs and struts? Anything else?
Also, do I need to replace the mounts or can I just use the old ones? My old dust boots are pretty tore up. Can I get new ones from Autozone or do I need to go to the dealership?
I'll also be installing my UDP while the strut and springs are out the way. I think this will make UDP install soo much easier.
I can't wait till it's done I'm tired of riding like a 4x4. I'll definately post some good before and after pics.

huh?

anyway, all these offers to do it for $100 and $150... anyone "know a guy" in southern NH or northern MA who'll do it for that?

And thanks for the words of encouragement but I'm not doing it myself...I can imagine me getting the car apart, doing something wrong, and then being stuck with an undriveable car for a week while I figure out what I did.

if your gonna pay 350 might as well go buy an air compressor and tools with that money and do it yourself... get an airgun and you can do the install in an hour... the fronts are really easy, the back ones will take a bit more time...

go to a local fixup shop that does mod parts and they'll give you much better prices... i think the spring install is quite straight forward.. i know nothing about cars and was able to change it with my friend...

2k2wannabe.

Where in southern NH? I just moved from Portsmouth NH to Anaheim CA, but still know plenty of people who might do it for a reasonable cost...

I know a place in Pelham NH called Pro-Techs Performance (not sure of the phone number right now). They installed my springs for about $200.00. The job was very professional and the techs there really know their stuff.

They also did my Centerforce Clutch and NOS install....WOW What a difference.

Give them a try I'm sure you'll be more than pleased with the results and the price...I am/was.
