First SES Light, car feels fine. Possible codes and your opinions

Well I got my first ses light. I disconnected the battery and it came back on. Overall my car feels good, although gas mileage is a little low. What are some of the possible problems and what do you guys recommend without getting r@ped at a dealership / shop.

Thanks
Happy Modding

best not to guess. it would be best to have the code pulled at either nissan, local garage, or autozone (free). most likely an O2 sensor but im not putting money on it.

Head over to your nearest Autozone and ask them to pull the code(s) for you -- it's a free service. If I were to guess, I'd say it's either the imfamous 0420 (covered by your 8/80 emissions warranty) or one of several codes pointing to a bad downstream O2 sensor (not covered by 8/80).

Thanks for the info. I went to autozone, turns out it was the 02 sensor. How easy are they to replace, putting them in my y pipe was a breeze. How much can i expect to pay for a new sensor.

Thanks!

check here they got a few brands to choose from and free shipping. would not hurt to either purchase or rent an O2 sensor socket.

Thanks for the link. Prices are way cheaper than the dealership that i stopped at today. The only issue that i am having is that i dont know which o2 sensor is out. The Autozone code was P0135, I dont know if that is a general 02 sensor code or if is specific to a particular sensor. I should have asked. The Nissan dealership said they would have to run the ol' $80 diagnostic to find out which sensor it was, no thanks! Do you think that an emissions place could find out for cheaper? Please help. Any info you could provide would be great. Thanks!

Take a look at the following TSB. Although it doesn't apply in your case, it has some nice diagrams showing you where the various O2 sensors are. P0135 means there is a problem with the heater circuit in sensor H02S1-B1 (the one with the black connector). If you're going with an aftermarket O2 sensor, make sure it has the right number of wires.

Thanks a lot, great info man! I'm gonna take a look at it tomorrow. Wishful thinking here, will the car run better with the replaced 02 sensor?

P0172 is fuel injection system rich (right bank). sounds like an injector problem. as for the O2 sensor, your gas mileage should improve slightly and they are responsible for calculating your air/fuel at all times except WOT so it could help restore some lost power especially if it just died out.

thanx for the response. Here is the thing though, i have a SE 2000. and once the car hits 80 it is hard for the car to just make it to 90, it feels like there is no power, the pedal is to the floor and nothing , it stays at 80-85, and it seems like it stays there forever. I was told that it could be the MAF sensor. I also have problems in the morning when it is really cold outside, the car doesn't want to turn on , the whole car rumbles. Could it be the MAF or the 02 sensor or the fuel injection system.

with the car shaking, i would tend to go with the maf or ignition coil. 2ks were known for a high failure rate on the ignition coils. there is a way to test the coils and i would think the same would apply to the maf. i would pick up a haynes manual from a local parts store and reference it for testing the coils. i dont recall off hand seeing a way to test the maf but ill check mine when i get home and post up any results if i find any.
i would go ahead and count out an O2 if its rumbling and having trouble turning over. the car uses the maf at WOT to determine air/fuel and at 80 i am guessing you are going WOT to hit 90 and the maf is crapping out.

wide open throttle. when you punch it, only the maf determines the air/fuel but normal driving its a combo of the maf and O2 sensors.

In regards to replacing O2 sensor, does the computer have to be reprogrammed after one is replaced. When I do it myself will the light go off on it's own? Basically will I end up still having to go to the dealership if I replace the sensor myself? Please advise.

the tsb calls for an ecu flash for a number of the O2 sensors codes. if it went out on its own, not a fault of debris ripping the wire then i would think it needs the flash. im sure the light could be reset after installing a new one but i bet it wont last as long as it should without the flash.

Sorry SloppyMax, I know we are beating you to death with questions.

I couldnt get the link to work/format, so im still unsure which sensor we are dealing with here, code was H02S1-B1.

For a conclusive answer to this thread, what do you recommend that I do to save $$.

I am def. going to buy a sensor on the internet. Should i replace the sensor myself and or take the oem sensor to the dealership and have them charge me an hour worth of work, try to charge me for an diagnostic, and have the ecu reprogrammed. Ouch.

Also after reprogramming the ecu, will my mods intake,y,b, be less effective or more effective on remain normal?

Thanks again

Sorry but P0172 could be caused by a host of different things ranging from a bad injector to a faulty throttle position sensor. I think you'll actually need to have a shop take a look at it for you.

It's the sensor coming off the exhaust manifold closest to the firewall.
Maybe this LINK will help (or you could just download and install Adobe Reader )
