wow, i never realized how crappy our gearing is. combine that with an overrated engine...no wonder a 225 hp 330i that is heavier can out-accelerate us....(at least it's close).

It does what I need it to do. I don't do any racing.

These numbers mean nothing without the other element of the gearing which is the final drive gearing....without that number, you have'nt a clue what you're talking in terms of comparing to another car....

i always thought it was just the gearing numbers that were important...but i guess i'm wrong..do you wanna give a quick explanation of how this whole thing works? anyway to know what speed an engine will spin at in top gear? thanks.

then sell your car and buy that one... it's overpriced, twice as expensive to fix, smaller inside and out, and twice as expensive to fix. Or just be happy with what you have and realize your "crappy" car with the "overrated engine" definitely out accelerates a car that costs 10k more.

No problema! Gearing is meaningful when you combine the gearing in the transmission (or more correctly in our cars, transaxle since the gearbox and diff are inside a single casing) with the final drive gearing, meaning , the gears in the differential itself.

For example, the effective gearing in a car with a 2.875 1st gear and (assuming) a 3.55 differential is actually 2.875 x 3.55 or 10.206 to 1. In second gear with the same 3.55 gear the effective gearing would be 1.545 X the same 3.55 or 5.487 to 1, and so forth and so on...in each gear the effective gearing is the actual ratio of the gear itself times the ratio of the differential (axle) gear.

So, a car with 2.875 1st gear and 3.55 differential ratio would be equal to a car with -say- a 3.20 1st gear and a 3.19 differential...multiply those two numbers and it will = 10.208, almost the same as the combination above.

For what it's worth, yes indeed, BMW gears their cars pretty short, meaning, high numerical ratios...my old 540 6-speed would barely reach 62 mph in 2nd gear whereas my 2001 SE 5-speed will reach 69 mph in 2nd gear....

I don't know about easily out-accelerate, but a stock at Max and a stock at 330 is a GREAT race to 100. Same goes for stick vs stick. The 330 is nice and all, but it doesn't rough up VQ powered competition, i.e. Max, Alti, G35, 350Z.
