picture of Engine area without plastic

Just removed the big plastic cover over the engine and saw that my engine had a lot of rust on it. Just bought the 2001 Max SE-AE and never checked the engine visible condition since the plastic cover was always covering it...any one has pics of their ride of someone elses with the engine showing ? Thanks

Rust on the engine , that's unusual. I guess the previous owner must have been washing the engine bay too many times.

Are you sure it is rust and not just oxidation on the aluminum. Salty conditions and moisture will cause that to be more noticable, but aluminum doesn't rust. Can you post a pic?

what do you have to cover..(besides the battery and fuses and relay box) to wash the engine with a hose or a sponge? the manual says to cover certain things and then you can literally hose it down but i'm too nervous to do that...

You can spray the entire engine. Just don't spray the water hard at any electrical connections. I don't cover anything, but if you are worried, use zip-loc bags/saran wrap as needed. I clean all of my car's engines frequently. I use Simple Green on the engine thing (when the engine is cold). A variety of brushes can be used to get the tough stuff. Then I use a light spray of water to rinse it all off. After that I usually take the car out on the interstate and make sure it is running ok and to heat the engine compartment up to reduce the chance of moisture problems. After it has dried and cooled off, I use Vinylx on the plastic parts and wax the engine bay where I can get to it. If you do it often, it is very easy. If it is a dirty engine, take your time the first time and do it good.

Oh, if you use some rubber gloves, it makes clean up easier.
