What is up with my hood?
What is up with my hood?
I've had this problem with my car since I bought it in Aug. When Im going down the highway at about 65-75 it looks and feels like the hood is going to fly the hell off! It shakes around and makes the car seem very unstable. I don't drive the Maxima every day I take my other car when its nice but since winter is here i'm driving it more and this problem is just out of control. So is there something I can do under the hood to stop this? Does anyone else have this problem? Should I take it to the dealer? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the TSB info. I'm wondering if anyone could go into detail about how to actually fix the problem. I'd rather not take the car in just to fix the hood but it still is under warranty so I guess its not a big deal. And yes the Maxima is my "beater" car of sorts if you want to call it that. I have a supercharged 98 Prelude and a G35C. The weather and my high insurance keeps me out of the two coupes over the winter though.

I say go for it J. I couldn't see driving the G year round but other than that its a great car. If you believe it I got the car used about 3 months ago and haven't driven it more than 2000 miles. But honestly I haven't driven a nicer car.

Hamy - Maxima hoods are in contact with the car at five points: the hinges at both corners near the windshields; little adjustable bumpers at both front corners; and at the latch point in the middle of the front.
Assuming the bolts on the hinge plates (at the windshield end of the hood) have not worked loose (if in doubt, a close look should easily determine their status), the problem almost has to be at the front.
The rubber bumpers at each front corner of the hood should be adjusted so that the hood is in perfect alignment with the fenders and top of the grille. If they are not, adjust them so that they are. This is a simple adjustment.
Once the four corners of the hood are in perfect alignment with the rest of the car, the latch should hold the hood against the front corner rubber bumpers with no play or wiggle. If it does not, it should be adjusted. That is also a fairly easy adjustment if one is mechanically inclined. A good dealer can make this adjustment in minutes.
Good luck.

lightonthehill - thanks for the info, I read over the TSB and went out and gave the car a good look. I guess this was a bigger issue than I thought. I'll have to take it to the dealer. It seems to have a solid contact in all 4 corners and the latch holds the hood tight. Hum...what a pain. Thanks so much for the help guys!

btw, nice rides.
Re: the TSB for hood vibration, "another dealer/Nissan cust service sucks post here."
Took my ride to a local Nissan dealer for the work on Nov. 20th 2003. Stated "parts required to complete, they are on back-order and we'll send you a letter of notification once received to come back." It's now Feb 6th, 2004 and...no letter, no parts and no resolution yet! (Yes...I am beating on the service manager/Nissan).
Hopefully you have a better experience than I.
