My freaking insurance just went up $200 a year.

First I'd just like to say thanks to all of the a$$es out there stealing headlights. Because of you my insurance went up from the low 1400's a year to the low 1600's. I got a letter in teh mail from Erie the other day stating that my vehicle was costing more to insure because of it's symbol rating. So I called my agent and asked what was going on. He looked into and explained the insurance industry's symbol system. It's A to Z, A being the safest/least stolen/easiest to repair vehicle and Z being an expensive death trap. Last year my Max was an H, he said thats a pretty good rating. This year it was reassesed and it's an N. He said that it a huge drop for a vehicle. So I asked him to pull a 2k1 Max. It slipped from an H to a J. A slip but not a huge one. He looked more closely at his chart and it said that the safety systems hadden't changed between the years. I agreed and told him that it was minor trim changes and the motor. Then it hit me, the freakin headlights! In my mind that is all that it could really be, the theft and the cost of replacement in an accident.

So watch your renewals this year guys!!! Even if your Max is safe in the garage your still getting screwed by those jerks!

IIRC another member here looked into it and he was told that the ins. systems hadn't been updated to take into account the larger hp figures with the '02+'s till just recently (mid-late '03), although the headlight thing also probably contributed a lot to the drop in rating.

I can understand the HP thing a bit, but thats a big jump for an extra 33HP!!

I premium increased about $180 here in the west coast for the next term.

Since I recently moved, insurance company told me it's due to my new neighborhood changed.... gosh, now I suspect that's not the only reason of the increasement of my premium... and I actually move within the same city, just slightly different zip code...

It has far more do with HP increase than the headlights. All cars with high horsepower are getting hit like the V6 accord. I've been through this with my insurance company and it is definitely the HP and very little to do with the HID theft.

Rates Up

In reality insurance companies find reasons, realistic or not, to raise premiums on car, home, health, you f**king name it. They are the only industry I know of that has the lobbying power to not only raise prices but have laws passed to help them. Believe me, they have the ear of the state and local governments. Please read Kick backs!!!

So, until some type of entity such as the federal government tightens the vise on these companies, it's going to get worse.

My rates sure did go up from about $1000 a year full coverage to about $1400 full coverage. Whatever the reason that sucks! I did notice the rating go from 15 to 18 on my policy whatever that means.

you guys have it easy...
nj resident here (enough said )

$48xx a year...also my name is not even on the maxima, it's under a '94 corolla and thats only liability -- but since i am in the household i am allowed to drive both cars

State Farm is the insurance provider

would taking a driving course significantly reduce my rates?

Age and marital status have a lot do with insurance premiums. Also some people don't realize it yet but your credit score also affects rates, which have become almost standard across the car insurance industry

for those in NJ, "New Jersey Manufacturer's" (NJM) is the way to go, however u have to be a clean driver with 3 years experience i believe..

for that reason, im stuck with All-State

biomaxdds - that's a ****load of money..what's the reason for that? mods, area, history?

i highly doubt it, in fact ur situation is exactly like mine

last march, i got into an accident with my parents camry, and i was an uninsured driver (got my license in jan. 03). it was 50-50. i didn't get a ticket, and mainted a clean record , but still had less than the 3 year experience requirement...so i was deemed unable to join any possibly NJM insurance plan.

however, my dad wanted to go for NJM with the rest of the family, i was gonna be left out of the loop, and had to get the car registered under my name as well as insured under my name. Anyway, his application was going smooth with NJM, and almost went thru..till he got a moving violation in Ohio. they ended the application process there, cuz they want people who are 100% clean

anyway, u should still try, maybe they changed their ludicrous policy, and if ur successful, it's good news for the rest of us in NJ who are gettin raped

If your credit score changes sometime after you sign up with a car insurance provider, I doubt the insurance company would lower your rates if the score improved (why not? they already got you by the ***** with the current rate), but do you think an improved credit score can influence your rates when you switch companies?
I.e., if you're in a situation where your credit score has improved significantly over a 1 year period, would it be worthwhile to switch insurance providers?

I had confirmed with the sales consultant in the insurance company, our Max symbol rating go down/up from H to J (he also told me saturn is A or B, bimmer is worst than J) this year, that's the major factory of our insurance premium increased. And that symbol applied nation wide.

I'm not sure how often they check peoples CR but i guess I could ask my independent agent. My guess is at every renewal, be it annual or bi-annual.
They (insurance industry) have it figgered out (supposedly) lower credit means more risk behind the wheel.

I posted the information about the rating changing from a 15 to an 18 two months ago my insurance went up about 600 dollars a year and i have a spotless record and im over 40, I do live in south Jersey in a very safe and crime free area. I think the biggest problem is the increase in hp and it took them time to notice it.

They will probably only pay (minus your deductible) for the OEM lights that came on your car in that case. They would not be obligated to pay for HIDs if you don't pay your premium that includes upgrades to your car.

Im 24 and get slamed with $1300 every 6 months. I just got my Maxima. I had an 84 pickup before. That was only $84/month. Liability only. What a difference. I think insurance agents where ski masks to work. I work closley with body shops. Stolen headlights puts about 6K in damage to your car. Dealerships around this way are putting an anti theft device on your lights for free.
