2" is much easier to wrap and keep a grip on so you can keep it tight. ive used both and 2" just makes it go quicker and easier.

I've heard that wrapping the exhaust causes it to rust faster...

if you live in a real wet climate or a place where road salt is used a good bit then you might want to rethink it. i have had two different types of wrap on my y pipe for about a year with no rust. this is in charlotte, nc climate and with a stainless steel cattman y. i use it to quiet down the flex section. i am sure its good for reducing underhood temps but that was not an issue for me.

If your have stainless steel exhausts, will wrapping the pipes cause rust later?

Thermotech makes a product that you apply to the wrap after installation which prevents fluids from penetrating the material.

I use 2" on my ypipe....what do you try to wrap?

Exhaust wrap is good to keep a stable exhaust gas temp reading. Others have used it to wrap their exhuast manifold to reduce engine bay temp. no rust so far with my stillen ceramic coated pipe.

I heard that it's not good to wrap the flex section on the y-pipe. It needs room to "flex" under high exhaust pressure (hint the flex design). Perhaps wrapping it NOT too tight will be okay? Does it make at big different in noise reduction if the flex-section is wrapped? I wrapped my y-pipe too but not at the flex-section because of that reason.

if you can bend the ypipe a little at the flex section after you wrap it, you should be fine. I think it needs to flex not because of exhaust pressure but to reduce stress on the cat. Everything is on rubber hanger after the Cat and they are made to be loose a little. Without the flex section, you will put a lot of stress on the cat and the connection between the cat and the ypipe.

I took off the ypipe last year to check the flex section and I re-wrapped the pipe again without wrappin the flex. I couldnt tell if there's any increase in noise.

Well, I am basically saying the same thing. The exhaust pressure = vibration is the source of stress on the cat. (ceramic substrate inside).

in my case, the vibration is mostly from road condition.
