Can they be used with an aftermarket head units? Some kind of harnes??? Box of some sort????

check audio and electronics. look for PAC. You can program them to do anything your remote can do. Don't forget that you have vol up/down, track up down, and then you can have vol up+down, track up+down, and mode. So that's 5 functions. If you get different functions depending on how long the button is held down, that's a couple more features
