Grill Tech Grills may rust? HELP!

I bought the upper and lower from grill tech about 1.5 weeks ago. That means it should probably get here sometime next year. Their S&H isnt so fast, but their product looks good. Afterwards I came on here and heard some people say that these grills are notorious for rusting. Cant say I am too happy right now. If you have Grill Tech, let me know what you know. I was wondering if a couple coats of clear coat enamel or latex would be a good rust preventer. Might not bond to well though. What is the best way to prevent rust and not sacrifice the appearance of the grill?

I've had both the upper and lower grills on since July and no rust yet.

I bought some lower inserts over a year ago and they rusted badly. According to Grille Tech, they use clear coat on them now. They claim this will keep them from rusting, but I'm not sure.

I think it has more to do with the material an insert is made of, rather than it's finish, especially in northern climates.

Try and get the order cancelled, go with JMS if you want a grill at all. GT's rust like crazy no matter what one does IMO. They rusted on me just 3 months after I put them on. Used a wire brush to get all the rust off, sprayed with 3 coats of silver rustoleum, and 4 months later, rusted again. Grill Tech sucks! ~85% of the ppl here who bought them had rust issues just months after installation.

I had one of their new "clear coated" grilles but it rusted.

I've sanded it, primered it, painted it, and clear coated it so we'll see if it rusts again. I've been too lazy to try reinstalling this piece of shiet.

You can clearcoat them. For the oprger who had them since July and it didn't rust, it is probably because it doesn't snow in your area and they don't spread salt on the roads?

It rusted within a few months during the SUMMER!

The worst part is that when I contacted them several times through email, they did NOT respond.

"Me no like grill tech, my grille look like kloogy's which is full of rust" Best thing to do when you get the grill tech grilles, put coats of rust proof on them

PWM2000, Studman has JMS grills
http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/

I don't think JMS makes them for '00-01's though.

i have had the grill-tech for about 9 months now and no problems so far or discoloration without any preventive maintenance.

Im screwed. grill tech came in the mail today. a sucker is born everyday. I spent money so im going to use them. Years ago i restored some rims and bought Nyalic (clear coat barrier) from the Eastwood Co. Should work better than Rustoleum or Dupli color clear coat. Rustoleum sucks by the way. I hear alot about JMS but some say they arent as attractive. The grill techs do look good, ill give them that. Thanks for all the responses and making me feel even worse about my "rust techs". Just joking. Any body know the best way to install these son of a b!+(he$. They gave me zip ties. ZIP TIES! The original has to come off. Im not installing them over the factory. LAME. Im going to post a new thread, but if any of you reading this have an answer, let me know.

Zip ties are the only way you can install them. You're talking about the lower valence right? Just put a tie on each corner of the grill and zip tie them from the back (plastic "lock" behind the grille). It's a b1tch to get on but the ties aren't at all noticeable this way.

No clue about the upper grill, I really hope you are putting like 10 coats of a rust proofer on it if you're wanting to put it as your main grille. That would really look like crap -- a rusted main grille :-s

My god, where have you guys been? Living under a rock? The Grille-Tech's are horrible. Go with the JMS if you want a quality product that is 100% guaranteed for LIFE.

I purchased mine around August... the lower one's are starting to turn brown. What a waste of my money! We should make a sticky notifying other new members not to fall into this trap. A grill should be a permanant mod! Not something that you have to change every year (or 5 months).

EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED WITH THE PRODUCT. I feel like like someone stole money from me.

Yes you're right...I've lived here for about 2 yrs now and it's only snowed once and there is no salt used on the roads here in Oregun but Triple8Sol is in Seattle and it don't snow there either. So why did his rust...I dunno a good answer to that...maybe just luck of the draw or something?!
