Extended Warranty?

Is getting a extended warranty worth it on a 00 Max w/ 75K? The original factory warranty is over and a friend got a similar warranty on his car...not from nissan but some other warranty company cost him about 1800 but it covers almost everything.

If it is worth is any ideas on what the best company to do this w/? Does nissan offer a warranty for car not purchased from them that arent brand new?

Thanks

Never understood the extended warranty thingy. Why would you buy a car thinking you would have almost 2grand in failed parts in the next couple years???? Maximas already have great reliablility. I bought one on my 95 and drove through the warranty in about 18 months and never used it. Worst 1000 dollars i ever spent.

What if i am buying the warranty for 4 or 5 years and for up to 100k miles? Do you believe that my Max '03 will be trouble free for the next 70k miles??? Can you bet $1500 on it? I can't...this is a looong time and lots of miles to come on a car that is very high tech. I thought about putting my $1500 in a bank and waiting to see what happens, but then again...looking at the 4 years to come and my 20k miles per year driving style.... is 1500 going to cover it all?
There is no right/wrong answer here...i guess.

If i was going to keep my Max for only 2 more years (20-30k miles) and if it was more "repair-friendly" or less complex car - i would NOT spend $1000 + for warranty, no way.

I aggree, I think it could be worth it. Ya its 1500 but that like a radiator job, brake job, oxygen sensors job, CV boot, clutch job...i mean thats all reasonable stuff that could happen in 100K.

I've bought my 2000 SE in March of '03. I got an extended warranty through an affiliate of my bank. If the warranty goes unused, then I get my money back. Sounded like a good deal to me!

Who'd you get the warranty through? That does sound like a good deal.

I got it through my bank. I forgot to mention that I paid an extra hundred dollars (non-refundable) to get the rest of the money back ($1200) if i don't use it. I'm sorry I don't have the name of the company right now. I'm out of the country and don't have any of the paperwork with me. I'll check with my bank and get back to you though, if you want.

I also purchased an extended warranty through an affiliate company that I bought the car from. My car has just under 50k miles on it and the warranty is a bumper-to-bumper warranty for 100k miles or 4 years. I spent about $1800 on mine with no refund if I don't need repairs. I figure I will eventually though, considering it's a 2k.

I purchased my extended warranty from Nissan when I purchased the car 2 years ago. There has been a lot of things I had to bring it back for. But don't believe them, it's not bumper to bumper. Be sure to read over contract well. My contract says in 2 different sections it's covered and then says it's not. The main thing it really covers is big stuff engine, tranny, joints, everything else is a $50 deductible. Check to see if you have a deductible. If you plan on modding I'd say do it. I had a couple of things go wrong after performing a mod. All I did was take a couple of things off and bring it in. It's like a 50/50 shot. If you're pretty mechanically inclined then keep the money for parts. But there are still window motors that can go out. and all kinds of nick nack $hit.

Bottom line on this whole issue is how much risk you feel comfortable dealing with...other than that it is truly a crap shoot.

Even though Maxima's have proven to be very reliable cars AS A GROUP, there is nothing to say individual cars won't be repair nightmares...or 'repair free'. If you keep a car well maintained and it came to you in apparently well maintained condition...and you might not keep it forever, then I would say don't bother with the warranty. If you tend to 'forget' maintenance items, drive a bit harder than usual, etc. you may want to consider it.

In any case, there is absolutely no guarantee you either will or will not use a warranty. It's a gamble.

$1200 - Cost of warrranty

~$2200 - Work I've had done under extended warranty
~$400 - 16 days in rental car costs the ext. warranty company picked up

~$1400 - What I saved w/ the warranty

If you don't think stuff can go wrong over 25k miles, I had my ignition coils, starter and transmission replaced between 65k and 75k miles (10k miles for the math deficient). If you can get one like ryand.white mentioned where they'll give you the balance back if you don't use it, definitely go for it.

And this was in my 2k maxima

In repairs (not maintenance items) i'd be lucky to get reciepts totaling more than 1500 on my 95. And all of that came post 160K miles. On the 2K max maybe 70 bucks in repairs (thanks to my wife taking the car over a 15 inch median)
