I think the only springs needing trimming are the teins-which as we have found out aren't really "performance-oriented" springs

Eibach with Tokiko HP trimmed bumpstop #2,3front and just #3 on rear

 

Tein S. Tech = 1.0" front and 1.3" rear.

 

I installed my H-tech and GR2s this past weekend. Teins recommended to cut the bump stops in the front and rear. What I did was take the bumpstop out of the dustboot. It was that little hard pale piece at the top of the dustboot. I cut an inch off the bottom of the bumpstop. There is no need to cut the dustboot and bumpstop together. That way the dustboot will still fit nicely up into the top hat.

However, i did not trim the rear because when i fully compressed the strut and springs, it did not hit the bumpstop at all.

That is what I am doing too.....take the oragne/pink part out of the boot and cut IT, not the boot. Looking at housecor's pics, though, it appears that the 2k2-3 dust boot is slightly different from the 2k-2k1 boots.....

Hey housecor, I got my Progress springs and Illuminas yesterday. Do you recommend going with what you did on the bumpstops?

 

i cut the front at about halfway before the first increment ( i guess it's be about .5) and i didn't cut the backs at all. i have a very modest drop though(H&R's) so i probably didn't even have to cut them at all. It rides just fine

 

I have S-Techs, no trimming, because i have no new shocks.

When I buy Illuminas and install them, I'll cut the stops to 1

 

I cut the pink inner bumpstops, not the boots themselves....

 

I take 2 off front and rear on every sport/lowering spring setup I install.

 

I bough tokico blue and actually it does not go by inches. its actually millemeters it looks about #1 for the front and in between 1,2 for the rear.

Since not EVERYONE that views this poll may be lowered or modified, they overwhleming answer of "DID NOT TRIM BUMPSTOPS" is problably not accurate.

This could be misleading.

The responses of course, do reflect the vast majority of dropped rides were, or Should be TRIMMED.

For the record: I'm not sure if mine are trimmed, but I know they SHOULD be!

Cut # 1 in half for rears and eliminated # 2 in fronts. Worked great!

 

I had a friend of mine at the dealership do mine when he installed my Illuminas. He told me he cut all four in half. The only problem I have is when the suspension compresses when I hit a pothole or a road that is misaligned while going over a bridge. Kind of a nasty noise and the dash rattles when it happens. People tell me its just the bump stops and not to worry.

 

I finally got back to my installer to MAKE him trim my bumstops, since he didn't the on the original install as per my explciti instructions.
I'm on Progress and Illuminas, and the car was bottoming-out on EVERYTHING!!!!!

Mark me down for #1 fr / #2 rr.

What a HUGE difference! I think I would have gone 2/2 in retrospect, but still....trim your bumstops if you're lowering guys!

only once. when it hit a huge pot hole and the whole wheel fit right in the pot hole...

 

When I installed my first springs -the Eibachs- I trimmed the stops per Eibach's recommendations 20mm front and 30mm rear -which made sense given the Maxes poor (short) suspension travel.

Wrong move as it iot made for very harsh, loud 'bangs' when the strut compressed all the way.

When I installed the H&Rs, I bought new, stock bump stops, installed them and the car is now perfect...the front struts do compress against the bump stops on big bumps but now it's a smooth take-up, not a harsh bang

Live and learn.......

 

I have Progress springs on and have not cut the bumpstops, despite what people are telling me.... I feel the same way you do... it rides fine even though I do have to be a little more careful with the front over certain bumps....

Please get back to me after about 10k miles, and THEN tell me how it feels.

I'm telling you guys -- trim them while you can, it gets unbearable!

Dude..the pics dont work and i READ THE THREAD and maybe i dont understand what a dust boot is and what it means when u say they need to be "cut" or not SO RELAX not everyone on here is as smart as you

 

Its pretty straightforward. When you go over larger bumps and rough road, the spring compress a lot depending on your setup. The dust boot covers the strut to protect it from dust...duh. So when you "bottom out", you end up hitting the boot, so you cut off part of it to compensate for that extra travel.

 

Maxspeed and Illuminas and no trimming......at all
