Transmission Problem?

Ok... Here's my problem.... I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE and the engine seems to run fine.... When driving and I hit appoxmatly 4000 rpm my car seems too lose acceleration... It feels like the transmission is just not catching all the way.... Then it will hit about 5500 rpm or so and it will kinda hang until I let off the gas.. Then it will finally switch to second gear.. When second hits the acceleration feels normal. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of what this might be.... I don't want to take it to the dealership to have them look at it if it's not going to be covered on my extended warranty..

Thanx for the feedback... But I don't think it's the transmission due to the fact that I pulled my spark plugs and they were coated with black deposits. I cleaned them and the next day I pulled them again. They were coated once again with black deposits after only a day.. So I'm thinking it's running rich.. I've done some searching for probable causes and have found few.. So if you guys have any sites that might help me diagnose the problem please let me know.. thx..
