Burning smell from exhaust....blown cat?

Today when I started the max I noticed a really strong burning smell from the exhaust. I drove 20 minutes to work and while talking to my coworker in the parking lot he also noticed the burning smell.

Could this be a sign of rusted out precats or the main cat? This past winter my exhaust was very very loud in cold weather but goes away after 5 minutes of driving. I only have a non resonated bpipe.

Has anyone here rusted out there pre cats or main cat on there '02-'03?

Nathan

Thats nothing, I have smoke coming out of my exhaust pipe! Seriously though, what is a burning smell? Burning like paper, or burning like plastic, or burning like human flesh? I heard that rotten egg smell could be caused by sulfur in fuel droplets on the cat or something else wrong with the cat. But you prolly have to specify a little more about this smell.

I had a burning plastic smell coming from my integra that wouldn't go away... looked under the car one day and found a grocery bag I must have snagged on the freeway clinging and half melted to my muffler.

Moral: check your exhaust system from front to back to make sure nothing's touching it that shouldn't.

Don't know anything else to check for.

if your cat isnt working it'll smell like sulfer (rotten eggs). Something may have melted, but also check your belts. Something under the hood may not be right

Thanks for the suggestion guys. I once had a plastic bag on my exhaust and it smelt like a dead animal. I'll check it out when I get some free time at work.
