People w/ Tinted Windows........................
People w/ Tinted Windows........................
After 6 months of trouble free driving, I've gotten pulled over for my tint today. I need to pay the fine AND get it taken off. I can have black tint but not reflective. I can either
1. Pay the fine and just keep my current tint (hoping I won't get pulled over again; especially by the same cop)
or
2. Pay to have it removed and put some black tint.
Anyone know what it would look like if I took some light black tint and put it over my current tint?

Puting a layer of tint over your current wouldnt look too good. I think it might even not hold as well as the tint on the window.
As far as option 1, do you think you will get pulled over, if not leave it on. I have had 5% on for a year and only got pulled over once, got off because my uncles a cop, but once in a year isnt bad. I say go for it and leave it on, or take a hairdryer and start peeling that **** off.

putting tint over tint is stupid, as it will likely not stick, and you will get a lot of distortion from the glue, especially at an angle. further, it will be ever more funny looking when you have reflective and non reflective mashed together. gives you that foggy look... from the inside. still looks reflective on the outside since light is reflected by the first layer.
tear it off and do it right.. just looked at your sig. yep i would have ticketed you too. illegal as hell.

I figured if I did peel it off, tinting shop won't charge me as much for putting new tints.

or you can get different shades like charcoat, smoked, etc and still look shiny. just drop that mirror... or get over the ticket, keep it/put it back on and wait for the other. it's a non moving violation so it's really up to how bad you want it.
Yes it will save you some labor fees if you peel your tint off yourself prior to taking it to the tint shop. Saved me around 70 bucks in labor when I did my tint. Took me an hour or so, used up half a bottle of windex and 8 razor blades.

As for how I removed it, I waited for a warm day. I then sprayed Windex all over the tint, let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, then using a razor I just scraped it off. Came off faily easy. I was quoted at $180 if the shop had to do everything. But in the end I paid $110

black is always good since it blends in. i have 20% but i am going to switch to 5% later this summer. i am just lazy taking it off and putting on the new one. i think i even have the 5% roll in the closet. procrastination rules.
btw, don't use anything sharp on the back window. one slice and your defroster is useless. and even if you don't use sharp stuff, its easy to damage still.
the sides, you peel off and clean the glue residue with whatever you want. i use sticker remover.
rear one, you can steam it off but that needs a steamer. just pull gently and work the glue off part by part.

Ok tint will stick just fine to other tint. It will not make it any less reflective though. Tint shops will not charge you any less because you pulled off the old tint. When you pull it off it leaves the glue from the tint on the window. You still have to deal with that. Most places charge a extra 50 or so to strip the old tint off. If you do not know what you are doing with the tint and want to have a shop tint your car after you strip it i suggest you just pay them to remove the old tint. Not only will you get a better job because they know how to get it off the easiest way but you will also save yourself a headache of removing the old tint. The best thing to clean the glue off with is a mixture of Simple Green and Alcohol and a razor blade. Takes it right off. On the back window spray it down with the solution and use a brillo pad or a meanie greenie scrub pad.
Now for you question about just pay the fine and risk it. Depending on the amount of the fine thats probably what I would do. To strip and retint a Maxima will run you around $200 at a good shop that uses good tint.

I was thinking of going to court and say I didn't know it was illegal. (time I got it done, I've seen tons of cars w/ front window tinted w/ either black or silver so I assumed it was ok). Maybe the judge can wave the fee but I'm afraid that he's going to tell me to have it fixed and bring it into a police station to make sure I took it off. But on the other hand, there's a possibility that the cop won't show up.

I feel for ya man, I was driving through Utah to go to BrianHead from Vegas, and these fricken cops have nothing better to do than pull people over for their d@mn window tint. But you know how I got out of it? I said, "really, this is illegal, that is strange, I got it from the dealership like this and you are the first person to even say something. I just thought window tint was window tint" Couldnt believe it, but he said it needs to be replaced and let me go. Now if I ever drive through Southern Utah, I just do it with my front windows down. ;-). I dont know if that would work to protest the ticket, but I will not take my tint down, especially in Vegas where it gets so damn hott. That is just, but I would not take it down. To hell with them bored @ss cops who pull people over to tint. People gettin shot everyday and they have time to do this...... Owe well
I got mine done a month ago. My 2k is silver with the vanilla leather interior. I got mine 30% in the front and limo in the back. The cops down here haven't bothered me yet. I don't know if ace window tinters is a national company but if they are, they do an awesome job. I can barely tell where the window ends and the tint begins. I don't recommend peeling your old one off because if you do and you don't get it all of the people that re-tinit it for you are going to charge you to get it clean b4 they tint it.
18% all around with strip on windshield. Where I live 35% is legal so I'm twice the legal on darkness. Plus on a white car makes it look darker. 4 years no tickets, I've even been pulled over for speeding, but nothing was said about the tint. I have a high grade platinum tint that has a metallic content and no dye. This tint is 4 years old, still no scratches, fade, peeling. I'm not much for the mirrrored stuff anyways.

Ammi....you know at night time our reflective tint looks just like any other smoke tint out there because of all the lights on the road and such, and the time it becomes the most reflective is on rainy days for some reason....
I always drive around w/ my sunroof open to let light into the cabin and at that point it lightens up the tint drastically....
I mean everyone who puts tint on their cars have taken the chance for a ticket- some are just luckier than others I guess.....And I personally knew from day one of putting this tint on that I'd run that risk
and that I would have to pay for private inspections...
I personally would just pay the fine and go about your life.....if we actually worried about stuff like that we all would be driving our cars like hey came from the factory....

True. Cloudy days or rainy days, they looks more reflective than sunny days. I got pulled over during rainy/cloudy day.
I'll just pay the fine and move on. Fine might be more because I just realized that he wrote me for having tinted windows along w/ license plate cover and blue reverse lights (even though emitting light is white)

Wow Ammi, I like how you've made your car look! I know, not helpful...but I totally undestand your predicament.....my boyfriend drives this....
Been pulled over sooo many times in this it's not even funny, but he likes the look and has a doctors note now, so they've just been throwing it out (despite the fact reflective is illegal
). I have simple titanium-metallic charcoal tint and have not been pulled over for it at all, nor have any cops said anything....so maybe that would be a good route to go? Still have tint...just less cop-attracting.....

). So every court date he has set for being pulled over for that they have dismissed it thus far. He has no plans to remove the tint at this time. Can't blame him, I think it makes the car. Anyways, I would just pay the ticket...I'm sure you paid alot for that special kind of tint why remove it so easily? Orr...if you're concerned about being pulled over more in the near future, go with just a plain charcoal, and it would still look good and you would still get the benefits, just not as flashy. Those would probably be my two options, depending on how much you like your current tint.
I like my current tint because nobody seems to have it around here.
I'm wondering if I should go to court and show the doctor's letter though. I mean the cop wrote on the ticket "mirror like film". I wouldn't mind having to pay the ticket but I just don't want the judge to tell me to get it fixed and bring it to a police station to get it examined. Not sure if he will tell me that though. I went to court before for my tint on my other cars (black) and every single time, judge dismissed the case.

I've been pulled over for this

But No TICKET.
IN NJ YOU can't have tints in front but as dark as you want in the rear.
Well i have 35% in the front and have been pulled over once in 4 months.

So the double tint fit the bill perfectly.
You can double tint and optically, it won't change. Besides being ink black, the clarity is not affected.
