2000-2001 Maximas- quality?

I have a 99 maxima ES. Luv it. Im looking for another maxima for my dad. I was gonna buy another 99 maxi and I noticed how cheap the 2000 and 2001 maxis are sellin for. I dont get it.

My question is, waz up wit with the depreciation?? Are these lemons? Just wondering what kinda probs people have experienced in general.

My 99 maxi only had a coil pack problem (had to replace all 6- lucky to find em cheap on ebay!). Other wise fabulous car, way better bang for the buck then V6 accords and camry's.

Any advise would be much apprciated before I start test drivin this weekend.

Thx

Problems: coil packs again, MAF, BRAKE ROTORS, oxygen sensors, rattles, wind noise, low gas mileage

I know I'm missing some - any else want to chime in?

May not be a bad buy considering over depreciation if all the problem items have been replaced. There was also a transmission problem with early 2Ks. Check the stickies for TSBs on the 2K and 2k1.

I bought my 00 SE just over a year ago. It only had 6400 miles on it and i paid 17k for it. I just passed 30k a week ago. I have had no problems at all since i've owned it. My Dad has a 2001 anniversary edition and he has 60k miles and has not had a single problem either.

Bought my car 9/00 and am currently closing in on 70,000 miles. At this time I need to replace my idle controller which is going to cost me roughly $190.00. Other issues were the OEM rotors and tires. I didn't have patience to deal with them so they were quickly replaced. Those 3 things have been the only issues that I've had on my car. I would say that's pretty damn good @70K. good luck.

I have no problems either at 49k miles. It is probably due to the fact that these have 3.0 Liters and the new ones have 3.5 liters. The engine 30hp gain appeals to people.

00-01's arguably have the strongest 5spd transmission's out of 4th-5th gen's... 4th gen's blow their 3rd gear pretty easy, and god knows the problems the people with 2k2+'s are having with their automatics and manuals... Even though the 2k2+'s have the VQ35, I don't know if it really outweighs the fact that ALOT of them are on their 2nd transmission with only 30k miles on the car...

2000 MAX reliablility

I've had my 2000 Maxima SE for 4 years and have put 80K miles on it. It's a quality car. They only things I've had to do to it was replace the rotors/pads once (yeah I had warping too), replace the faulty coil packs ($120 on EBAY) common on 2k's, and replace the suspension. I've also done all my own suggested maintenance. 3 problems, that by the way any novice wrench can fix themselves, is damn good for a car with 80k miles. I hope my next car comes at least close to that kind of reliability. I expect to get this car to 200K. If it wasn't for the G35 Coupe, my next car would probably be a Maxima.
I can't understand the depreciation either. I think they are at par with the Honda's and Toyota's as far as reliability and they smoke both of them stock. Buy the Max, its a bargain.

I've had the following problems since buying my 2000 used last June w/ 26K miles:

1. Front rotors warp like it's nobody's business. I'm hoping to eliminate this with the BlehmCo BBK. Note that I AM hard on my brakes, especially during commuting, so the warping isn't too surprising.
2. Stock tires are horrible, I bought new ones. Turns out I also had bent a wheel on the stock tires, and the tire shop never caught that. Bent wheels are possible on any car with fairly low-profile tires, so that's not saying a lot about this car necessarily.
3. Parking brake troubles--the left parking brake cable must've busted open and allowed water/dirt to get inside, because I had a number of episodes this winter where the parking brake stuck froze, resulting in glazed pads/rotors on the left side. Replaced the cable and caliper (caliper seemed to be bad too), working on changing out the pads/resurfacing the rear rotors. I read on motorvate.ca that the parking brake cable can be crushed if it's located too low near the left rear jacking point, because a mechanic's 2-post lift can crush it when they're lifting the car.
4. Not a problem per-se, but I did change out my coils (and spark plugs while I was at it) as preventative maintenance. In addition to that, I did a cooling system flush kinda early, and I changed my fuel filter for the hell of it at ~50-55K miles, and noticed a significant difference.
5. Suspension. The stock struts are horrible, usually becoming overly stiff on bumps and sloppy on the highway around 50K miles. I installed Tokico Illuminas and am happier than a pig in sh*t with the ride quality and handling, although I've only started with suspension mods

I have not experienced any of the aforementioned issues such as the MAF, O2 sensors, low gas mileage (average ~25mpg), wind noise, although I have had a rattle in the passenger front door and some rattling in the rear deck under heavy bass, but both of those I could fix if I quit being lazy and just did it

Oh yeah, at least in 2000 the 5-speeds have the annoying "Fuel Cut" issue, for which there IS a TSB out, but it requires an ECU flash (probably a decent amount of $$ if you're out of warranty), this is a phenomenon where the ECU cuts fuel to the cylinders if you're above 1800 RPM with minimal load, like trying to maintain speed in stop'n'go driving in 1st gear... it's very annoying. But like I said, an ECU flash at the dealer should solve it.

yup...my front rotors gave too. Nissan claim that the brake pad was the cause of the problem because the excessive heat that the material generates.

the toyo tires on the 16s are ok. I am still on my original tires with 61k miles.

We replaced a leased 99 SE with the 2k SE in Nov 2000. Wanted out of the lease and it was cheaper to trade than buy it out (what's up with that!) With 51k miles on it here is what I have done to it:

1. Warped Rotors replaced (did the work myself with Raybestos rotors and Mighty Pads - softer compound to help with warpage) at 45k miles. Original rotors turned by NIssan at 25k miles. Our ext warranty would have covered but the nissan replacements warp too.

2. Replaced the stock 17" Potenza (death tire) at 28k miles with Cooper Lifeliner SLE tourings. Totally changed the car. Handles better and goes great in snow/rain.

3. Coil packs were replaced under warranty by Nissan when they were diagnosing our mystery problem, they also replaced the Y-pipe and pre-cats but neither the coils or the pre-cats were bad.

Edit:
4. O2 sensor at 48k miles In January

Other than than it has been awesome! Great roadtrip car.....

2k1 SE 5 spd, 49k miles since new. O2 sensor went at 28k (plus the ECU reflash), warped rotors like everyone else. Other than that, she purrs.

(anyone mention the paint chip issues? I have a few but it's wear and tear stuff)

Also FYI, I swapped out my pads & rotors for Raybestos rotors and Raybestos QuietStop pads, and the warpage happened just like the OEM rotors/pads.

I bought my '01 SE in November of 2000 and I've had very few issues with her. I'm at 88,000+ miles now and she still drives like a dream. I've only had minor issues:

1) SES light that needed an ECU flash.
2) Warped rotors which I replaced with slotted Brembos anyway.
3) Fans in the engine bay seem get a bit louder with age.
4) Slight rattling from the passenger-side A-pillar sometimes.

Other than those little things, I still love my car. I do my own motor oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, battery, burnt-out light bulbs, and transmission fluid changes, tire rotations, and my mechanic helps me with my brakes and any other preventive maintenance that I don't do myself. The car has only been to the dealer once for that ECU flash.

The only things I've modified was to add a FSTB and RSB to improve the suspension, and the rest are cosmetic (AE pedals and AE door sills).

Perfect!

Peace.

I have a 2000 GXE...it's the best car I've ever owned from an enjoyment standpoint. An O2 sensor and the coil packs were replaced under warranty (prior to me owning the car). I've since had to replace another 02 sensor and upgraded the front brakes, replacing the rotors with aftermarket (mine warped too). 53K miles now. New tires made a BIG improvement, and bought these the week I bought the car (visit my site and you'll see why, given what my wife did to our previous Camry when a tire blew out).

I have a 2k SE 5spd. and im in love w/ the thing. its got 82k now, i got it with 72k. It was the car i learned stick on, and im tellin you, ill prolly keep it for the next 5-6 years at least. one of the few nice sized cars that can handle my height (6'5) and not be like a boat. Only problems ive had on it so far was just the Ignition Coils, and the rotor thing which ill get fixed sometime next month.
its good to finally have a car that you can take pride in.

Thanks to all who have given such valuable info. It saves me the time and $ to buy a lemon aid car book!

I'll test drove a few and feels great. I guess the thing I have to keep in mind is to allow for a repair contingency budget. The price is so good, I dont think I can refuse.

Besides the car will not be driven hard or much.

Wonder if Nissan irons out the bugs in the 2002 and later?

Anyways you guys are terrific!

Replaced stock tires at 45k

Thats it other than oil changes

BTW, it averages 24-27mpg, with a best of 29.5mpg, no complaints there...

Bought my 2k last year with 35k miles on it. Have had to replace three of the coils (I couldn't afford to do all six), rotors, driver side window motor, mass air flow sensor, and I'm 95 percent sure my starter is going. Overall, more than $1k worth of work because diagnosing the dang ignition coils took me a trip to two different dealerships and a privately owned garage.

Add onto this that my car is depreciating faster than I can make car payments, and I'm pretty dang PO'd. I've had about three mechanics tell me never to buy Nissan again, and I agree. It's Honday's and Toyota's for me as soon as I can ditch this lemon of a car.

I've had my 2k for over 4 yrs now. Only problems were ignition coils & warped rotors. This is still the best car I have ever owned and I still love it! I normally get tired of a car after a year, but not this one.

I also had a MAF failure, but that came a little over a week after installing my Frankencar intake. Besides, MAF failures are universal with Nissans (Moranos, Pathfinders, Altimas, etc.)

My opinion on depreciation is that it has something to do with the extras on the 2k2/2k3s - HIDs, 3.5, navi, etc.
