Tips for stock muffler.
Tips for stock muffler.
Maybe it's a sign that I'm getting old. I'm beginning to think the Evo is a bit too much for my taste as of late when it comes to both sound and looks. I'm considering doing away with my Greddy Evo rear section and going back to my stock muffler. Two questions I have are: given the fact that I have a Cattman y-pipe and Greddy B-pipe, what kind of sound should I expect? And what kind of tips should I use, I just want something decent looking without going overboard. Pics would certainly be appreciated if anyone has done something similar.
Thanks
Thanks
I would love to get the tips that Frankencar uses on their catback exhaust....I emailed them but no response. Anyone know where they get their tips from? I thought I read somewhere that the tips themselves had some other brand name on them...
Yes, I too am feeling a bit old. I just bought a 2k1 se manual. I used to have a 95 maxima with full exhaust done. I got so sick and tired of hearing the droning and not being able to talk on my phone and having ricers tell me my car sounded cool. My 2k1 is so quite I love it. I absolutely do not intend on changing the muffler or b pipe for a measley 5hp. I do, however would like to install a y-pipe. I am interested in hearing people's opinion on the "aftermarket y-pipe/stock muffler" setup. Who has it and how quite is it. Which y-pipe has no bees in can and lasts the longest. I intend on having this car for a long time and don't want to worry about the y-pipe crapping out on me. Can anyone say that there ypipe/stock muffler sounds the same as all stock. Hook me up with the info. Thanks

Funny, I'm in the market for a y-pipe too, and I was just thinking the exact same thing... I have a Greddy Evo and have been thinking about going back to stock, Cattman, Frankencar, or even Stillen rear section when I do get my y-pipe....
Anyways, there are some sound clips here: http://www.waveperformance.com/mufflerclips/muffler.htm that might help.
The one with HS headers and stock muffler way interest you guys, since the y-pipe won't be quite as loud as headers, but the sound should still be somewhat similar..... its this one: http://home.comcast.net/~nathan.day/...ps/hotshot.wav

Y-pipe with stock B-pipe and muffler will add noise to the exhaust note. It sounds really nice when your engine is just warming up as the exhaust lets out a lopy growl. The exhaust noise goes away after 2,200rpms though, leaving you with only an engine note after.
Get a B-pipe without the resonator and it makes it more noticable. There will never be drone with this setup, keep that in mind. There will just be more exhaust note added. One thing that an aftermarket Y-pipe changes is the idle note, there is more growl to it, mainly because of the unequal-length piping from the aftermarket Y-pipe vs. the equal-length piping on the OEM pipe. Some like it, some don't.

I have a midpipe from my Greddy... maybe I'll try having a y-pipe with that and the stock muffler.... hope it won't sound too weird.... I guess like ScreamingVE mentioned, at least it won't drone....

An aftermarket muffler will provide better flow then stock, but not much. Stock y-pipe is very constictive because is has two precats and a resonator, this help with pollution but also make the engine run hotter. Plus the stock flow design of a ypipe is designed to circulate the gas a little. check out that artical on motorvate. and i'm pretty sure the 5 gen has some sort of chamber setup on the muffler. all that crappy noise for 4-6 hp is just retarded. I've seen 100s of ugly fart civics in NJ that I just don't want to be anywhere associated with those morons. oh, and getting people to turn there heads because ur car is noisy is...stupid. Hey man ur car sounds good..derr
