Under the Hood Question

This might be a dumb question, but I'm not too familiar with some of the stuff under the hood.

Anyhow, I installed a Stillen Cone filter a while back. I noticed this weekend while changing my oil that at the front of the car (right side beside the battery on the left), the original plastic part that would normally connect to the stock air box was loose - the "scoop" I believe. Only attached by 2 screws at the front. I tightened the screws, but wondered if I even needed the scoop since I use a Cone Filter now.

Anyhow, it also has an electrical sensor stuck into the top of it (wires attached to the side of the battery and then run downward). Once the cone filter was installed though, the scoop just "stops" and all that it seems useful for is getting air from the front of the car to the Cone Filter?

I was wondering if I took out the "scoop" would it be detrimental? Also what is the purpose of that sensor?

I hope someone might know what I'm talking about. I know this isn't explained well at all, but I'm not sure about the correct terms. Thanks.

leave the scoop and use it as a ram intake. you will get more air from outside.

I'm trying to figure out a way to attach the scoop to my frankencar intake (some custom piping)....but just to get a little cooler air.

You can really just remove the scoop entirely - it's not doing anything to help if it's not attached to the air box. The air will come in just as easily without the scoop there....

The wires attached to it, can't remember what they are but they will be ok if you let em hang or attach them elsewhere if you remove the scoop. I don't think its a sensor though, I think it's a relay.

on a side note, as has been discussed a million times here - "ram air" or "ram intake" is a fallacy. There's not such thing. You can change the temperature of the intake air depending on the location of the intake "mouth" but the velocity of the air going in is constant....the intake can only handle "x" volume of air at any given time. There are a couple of HUGE threads on this subject...
