I swapped from the Cat. back to the muffler with new piping and a new resonator. I have 2.5" piping leading to the muffler. Muffler is a Powertech PT1012. The tips are huge, I originally wanted the 1011 but was no longer available. The sound from this setup is much louder than stock. My stock piping was 2". If I get a Y-pipe will it make the muffler even louder. I'm really looking for a deeper tone. It kind of sounds like a Civic in the lower RPM range. I was expecting more of a 350Z deep sound. Also which Cat. is recommended so I don't throw an SES light. Cat. needs to be 2.5".

aint that something. just yesterday i had my powertech installed. i went from the resonator back. i didnt want it to be too loud. I think it sounds incredable. exactly what i was looking for. it dosnt sound like bummble bees or a mustang. it has an exotic sound to it. your PT is probably alot louder. I got the 1011 model and i think the tips are pretty big, I can imagine what the 1012 looks like. How much were you charged for the installation? Forget all those other exhaust systems. they may increase hp, but they sound like $hit. Powertech is one of the best sounding mufflers for a Maxima. Here is how I found that out. http://waveperformance.com/mufflerclips/muffler.htm
This should also answer your question as to what they Y-pipe sounds like with a PowerTech. As for a cat, i dont know. I still have warranty so im not about to mess with emissions control systems. And the SES light. I asked that same question but no one ever responded. So let me know to.

It's not much louder at all under normal driving. There is no droning. When you go wot or get on it, it has a nice deep note to it, but it's not annoying at all.

I dosnt carry a name like Greddy or flowmaster, but it can certainly hang with the best. highly under rated.

I have the cattman y and budget b pipes with my stock muffler. It's noticably louder (stock is just about silent) and super deep on crank up. It's all the growl I wanted.

Personally I had the PT1011 for one day and it sounded like crap. I agree with thomasd cook that it sounds like a civic. Maybe with all stock piping it's not as loud, but I heard people say after I bought the piece of junk that it wasn't a quiet muffler. Remember that you get what you pay for. Save up and get the FrankenCar, Cattman catbacks. Or just do what I did and keep the stock muffler replacing all the piping and welding on tips.

The PT1011 is the best sounding muffler I've heard. It doesn't have the normal ricer sound, but rather a nice deep exhaust note.

Where is the cheapest place to buy? Someone posted a while back that they found it for around $70.

The 1011 is the exact same muffler as the 1012, only difference is the tips. By the way I had the the resdonator swapped out but the sound comes from the muffler itself. Sounds great once I get over 2000 RPM's but too loud before that. I paid $99 shipped. And I paid $100 to get everything done at a shop. I originally wanted to keep the stock muffler and swap the piping but I found it wouldn't make much of a difference performance wise because the piping is too small. I'm trying to keep everything at 2.5".

y pipe and stock muffler i think is the best.. you dont get much noise while crusing but once u floor it .. you hear a nice deep rumble and your muffler will sound like a 350z.. its nice...

Not too sure what you're asking, but the Cattman y-pipe is $350 shipped. I bought it in a group deal for $315 shipped I think.

I'm puttin a Cattman Y on any day now, to go with my PowerTech PT1012 (same sound as 1011, just different tips). I will let you all know how that goes.. hopefully I will retain the deep tone of the current set up.

Can you please post results or let me know what the sound difference is? If I get a Y-pipe will it make the sound a little deeper or will it just make the exhaust sound louder? I'm looking now for a deeper sound than the high pitched Civic sound at lower RPM's.

I have been running a PT muffler ( dual 4" tips ) with the Y-Pipe for over a year and it's louder than stock for shure but it make a nice growl, I kept the resonator though. When I first pick up the car I though it was loud as hell but you get use to it, also I never got pulled over with this set-up.

Cheers

So you guys saying:
If i got y-pipe with stock muffler it's gana be loud as hell, like civic wich i don't want that.
But if i got y-pipe with PT1011 muffler it would sound like 350Z or like supra deep sound on crusing.

I don't want the civic muffler sound when i drive normally .

Actually, I think what many are saying is that with adding the Y Pipe to the stock muffler you will end up with a fairly quiet car at idle and regular driving rpm's, but you'll hear it when you get the rpm's up there. If you add the Y Pipe and the PT muffler, you'll have an overall "louder" sounding car throughout the rpm range. With either setup, you won't sound like a Civic. I will be adding the Cattman Y Pipe while utilizing my factory muffler as my first exhaust mod.

If you put a Y-pipe with the stock muffler and keep the resonator it's going to be louder but not annoying, at idle it will be barely noticeable, but it's not like a civic I would say it's more in between of the 350Z and a mustang. If you remove the resonator, keep the stock muffler and put a Y-pipe, then it will rumble similarly to the set-up like I have ( PT + Ypipe + reso ) people really like the sound it generate. Forget the Civic the VQ is nothing like a four banger.

Good luck

I plan to install cattman y-pipe and b-pipe with resonator and keep the stock muffler. From what I've heard, this will give me a good deep sound without going too loud which I don't want. I have the y-pipe, but the b-pipe has been out of stock for over a month now. I'm really getting anxious and I'll post my impressions when I finally get it and get it installed. Sound is subjective. Some like it loud, some don't. I like a little stealth.

Hey 2k1seae, that sound like a nice set-up, it should produce a nice growl.

Good luck.

well i have a greddy evo catback... and once i put the cattman ypipe on, it made it louder from 4k rpms and up..... that was the only thing that changed for me... i love the deep growl that the cattman makes... but if u wanna keep ur car quiet... not sure that ypipe is the way to go...

did anybody check this website that I threw out? http://waveperformance.com/mufflerclips/muffler.htm
Keeping a stock muffler will definitly keep your ride quieter, but have you ever taken a good look at the stock muffler? Its huge! I can only imagine how any chambers are in there. You would get better performance with a straight through exhaust IMO. the less resistance the better. The PT with your resonator on really isnt that bad. I have that set up and some can barley tell I changed it if they didnt hear it stock. its perfect. Exotic sounding and strong.

I originally wanted to keep the stock muffler but figured what's the point of going 2.5" piping from the Cat. back if I'm going to reduce it back down to 2" going into the muffler. The performance gain would be negated. What's a good high flow cat that other's have used that won't throw an SES light? Also what kind of difference in sound will it make if I swap the Cat.?

I have heard here that the stock muffler is a pretty good muffler. This may not be proper terminology, but I think it's dual stage. It opens up and reduces back pressure under full throttle. I think that there are baffles in it that allow for this. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. lol Anyway, quiet without losing too much power.

That is the impression I was given also about the factory muffler. However, the inlet is 2" so I see no point in getting 2.5" piping from the Cat. back and then reducing it back to 2" going into the muffler. That was the only reason I swapped it out. Also the factory muffler is HUGE and pretty heavy.

That's my understanding as well; which is why I havent "upgraded" to a Greddy Evo. It's also my understanding that the Maxima exhaust is carried over from the JDM Skyline (R34, I think) so, I figure why mess with a good thing.

But, I'll probably make the Cattman Y-pipe my first mod once (IF) I buyout my lease.
