Notes on Berk Intake install. Pics to follow.

This morning, the Berk Intake went on after much procrastinating by yours truly. My friend Luis and I did the install in the garage, amidst McDonalds McGriddles (yummy), and cold temperature.

Altough straight-forward, the install went a bit long. We spent 1/2 hour heating up the couplers, so they would be flexible enough to fit on the MAF adaptor and the intake mid-pipe. My ma was looking at me like I was crazy putting the plastic couplers in the microwave.

Edit - Don't be afraid to heat up the couplers in the microwave, that way they are a bit more flexible and can be coaxed onto the MAF adaptor and the mid-pipe. Otherwise, be prepared to be aggravated, as they will take considerable elbow grease and swear words if you catch my drift, tight fit indeed Bryan!

The rest was a breeze, the intake assembly is extremely light, so I didn't have a need for the attached powdercoated bracket which bolts to the strut-tower.

Total install time 1hr - about a 3 on a 1-10 difficulty rating (1 being putting air in a tire 10 being rebuilding a motor)

I drove around for a bit, looking for a nice straight, and when I hit it, I just about messed in my pants. The sound at WOT is insane. It's a high strung yowl, Luis said the car now sounds like it's angry when I hit it hard.

No discernable change in idle, or under-3K rpms, but after then it is just nasty. When I spike the throttle in N or P, I get a pleasant wooshing/sucking sound. I had Luis blip the throttle, and when he was hitting it, the exhaust sound was quite rich, and I was getting some popping off-throttle, very nice.

Off the line, it feels about the same pull, at 30-40, the lag to enter the nice powerband is more pronounced now...With the Cattman Ypipe, the 30-40 lag seemed to have been quelled, but now its back worse than ever. It's no big deal for me, as long as it pulls hard up top, which it does...My Max has the 4spd AT, 1st gear pulls to 38, 2nd to 78, 3rd gear to 120, 4th gear Unk...I've done 130 in the car with some tach left over, I would think NOW with the nice open breathing of the intake/ypipe, it would probably get up to 140..

I also jumped on the x-way, and quickly realized that up top, the motor spins a lot more free and pulls very hard anywhere over 3K rpms.

I'm going to a track meet this Saturday with a bunch of other Nissan people, and hope to get some good sticky launches/runs under my belt, wish me luck all.

P.S. No Service Engine Soon light, yay!

Congrats! You picked a great intake, Fernando. Did you reset the ECU? If so, that's why there's no SES light.

It won't go down if you always want the growl. Just calm down and drive properly.

thanks for the idea with heatin up the couplers since when i tried installin all i got was 40 mins of cussiin and 2 bloody fingers and coupler still ain't get on the tb, had to use and old coupler i had for an old intake off another car. and to get the coupler on the maf took 3 people and a tiny flat screw driver to get on so yall better of doin the microwave thing. i took everything off cuz i got check engine light but most likely was my fault when i was cleanin the tb, since autozone says it somethin with high idle and boy does it idle high 1000 rpms warmed ed up in gear. so after i get that fix from dealer i'll put the intake bac on.

As far as the gas mileage, yes I imagine the gas mileage will suffer, but once the novelty of hitting it to hear the vicious growl goes away, I'm sure it will go back to normal. Hell, at this point the car is a gas $$ pit anyway, so its no big deal.

I gotta find somebody with a digital camera to take photos, and then I can post them. I should have it up in two days.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Red couplers, I couldn't wait.

Nothing to think about. This will be one of the best mods you can do. 3 months now for mine and no SES light whatsoever.

Just make sure you disconnect the neg. battery terminal during the install, and be very gentle with the MAF (ie done't drop it) and you shouldn't get a SES light.

I just did my Berk install on my 2000 I30 and no SES. Like the growl, but I am not so sure about the whistle that comes on light acceleration. What do others think?

Oh and red connectors to match my FSTB.

Thanks. I've gotten 32 mpg on the highway with the cruise at 68 = 300 miles on 1/2 tank to Cleveland and back.

the whistle is from a leak.mine doesnt whistle at all just growls when you floor it.i averaged 19 to 20 mpg before the intake and am driving just as hard and am getting 20 mpg on 5 tanks since i put the berk on. if only i could make a whole tank without wot all the time i bet i would get much better gas milage!

i dont get much of a whistle either, can barely hear it. as far as getting the couplers on, i just used a small amount of grease and they slid on pretty good after that. MPG stayed the same or i guess you can say it decreased but that was because i was at WOT everywhere i went.

Hi all,

I orderd my Berk intake a little while ago and installed it about 2 or 3 weeks ago, I love the sound, I was initially going to install a jwt filter on it but the one I had was for 4th gen and it wouldn't match up with the maf of my 5th gen...So i been using an old K&N i had.

It took me a while to get the rubber couplers on as well, didn't use any grease or heat and it was cold outside...that was an experience but i got it on!

The only thing that bothers me is my car feels slower...I am always paroniod about this (and it could be me) but it just feels slower overall. I did run a faster 0-60 gtech time (same place hotter day) but I think it was because I got a better launch. I also have to consider the fact I installed my box and sub in the trunk that day so the extra weight maybe hurting me or the filter...idk

Overall I am satisfied with the quality much better then some others I bought for my other car!

Im thinking of fabbing a sort of shroud that would channel air to the filter, air that comes in through the stock air collector that sits on top of the core support. After I took off the airbox, I was left with the air collector, and it curves down, but it ends there, so I wanted to keep this and use any more air flow to my advantage.

The entire assembly is extremely light, so I didn't use the supplied bracket which bolts to the strut tower.

Thats what I just did to channel cooler air towards the intake:

Ok I am a car noob and just got the intake today.
Was the black piece between the filter and the red band supposed to come with the kit or does that come off the car???
Thanks
Sorry dumb question I know

The black piece that you are refering to comes from the car. It is the tube that the MAF is in.

No prob getting couplers to fit here, I installed them Monday when it was 90 F outside in the shade, I did put a small amount of Lithium grease on each one, made them slide right on. No SES light here, had the neg. terminal off. I notice the whistle also (serious growl at WOT), I think its just the air swirling around something in there, no leaks to speak of. What did you guys do with the transaxle breather hose? I couldnt find where it was hooked to, now it just sits there not connected to anything. Does it belong hooked up somewhere?

Ferbs, are you going to leave the intake in when you get service at the dealer? ie, change oil at dealer. I'm woindering if I should take out my FC intake before getting an oil change at the dealer.
