What could this be a sign of?

It's a minor issue I hope, but it seems everyday I get ready to leave work for lunch, I go start my car, but when I put it in reverse to back out the engine cuts off. So I start it back up, put it in reverse and the same thing happens. So on the third try I give it a lil gas while I'm in park to rev the engine, then I put it in reverse and it's fine, Any clue to what can be causing this. I wanna have an Idea before I take it in to be checked out.

Sounds like a possible timing issue. Does it stall out when you're sitting at a stop? If you're taking it in to have checked out, why does it matter? They'll find out soon enough when they try to back it out of the parking space won't they? Hopefully they can figure it out and get you back out on the road without you spending too much cash.
Good luck.

I wanted to have an idea of what it might be, before i took it in and they started telling i need all kinds of stuff i needed. I don't have a warranty anymore so i trying to keep the cost of repair down by aviod uneccessary checks. It doesn't do it all the time, Not even in the morning on a cold start. I was at a light last night and I rev the engine and when it came down it cut off.

Sounds like a timing or fuel delivery issue. Have you checked/replaced the fuel filter?

I thought it maybe a feul issue too, I've had this car since 2001, as far as i know its never been changed or checked. I have no idea where to find or even check the fuel filter. I have limited auto mechanic skillz!
