I have the 35/75 size. I got that one because the top posts are closer to the edge so I didn't have to bend the positive connector.

is this simply a cosmetic mod?

or is it there a special battery beneath that pretty red dress?

They have more CCA than the stock battery, are truly maintainence free, more vibration resistant, have more reserve capacity....and yeah, they look better.

so do cold cranking amps really help in the "cold" or does the cold imply a "cold" engine?

It wouldn't be needed here in KC, it gets pretty darn chilly, but it's not like I live in Northern Minnesota..

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure if CCA refers to air temp or a cold engine. I always thought it meant cold temps, and obviously the engine and oil are then very stiff and harder to get into motion. Living in Wis., the more CCA the better! With my Red Top this past winter, the Max seemed to turn over and start quicker than with the factory battery, even when it was well below zero.
