Ridiculously low MPG on a 2000 maxima!!!!
i've been getting less than 200 miles per full tank on my 2000 maxima gle. i think it's around 175-180. It's unbelievably low. It equates to about 10MPG?!?!?!?! wtff thats less than a h2 hummer.
My friends tell me that the maxima is a real gas guzzler but this is just plain ridiculous. And everytime i start the car i can actually see the needle drop on the gauge. And gas prices are going up....i dunt drive that much per day. mayb 20-30 miles a day but i have to fill up every four days.
I read the thread on the 3.5 VQ MPG and ppl are getting like 30mpg....i am just amazed.
I have to figure out what's wrong with my car. I've had it since last november (23k).....and now its at 27k on the odometer. I haven't gotten a tune-up or anything yet. Could that be the problem? also, my steering wheel tilts to the right alot....could it be a misalignment problem? (i've done the alignment 3 times after i installed my continentals)
This is really frustrating. If anyone can offer me some advice on how to improve MPG....that'll be great.
Oh BTW, i do 70% local driving and 30% highway
Thanks.

Like limsdandy said but also i would check your tire pressure. It is very important to make sure your tire pressure is what its suppose to be. The fact that you say your car is not properly alighned decreases gas milage and for some reason i dont think you drive to slow to be getting that type of milage aswell lol. Check your tire pressure and get your wheels alighned and see what happenes. If that doesnt work go to your mechanic and ask him if you should change your gas filter.
Good Luck.
Good Luck.
Thats weird im also getting low gas milage, about 210 per tank, and i have never filled up 18 gallons, the most i have ever put in my tank was today when i ran it completley down to Empty and i filled up at 16.7... i dont know what that means, Nissan gave me a smaller tank? lol
thanks

and that was with aggressive mixed city/highway driving. Also had the A/C
on most of the time to boot.
There is a noticeable trend here...
BrandonSE and maniax are both from NYC.
I get about 15-17mpg mixed city and highway myself...
I have never even gotten close to specified by manufacturer gas milage in this city..
the reason is either our gas is complete sh-t, diluted crap..
or that everything that we call "highway" driving here is worse than city driving elsewhere in the country.
Average highway speed is low, speed limits are at 45-50. Plus you often stand bumper to bumper there for 20 minutes, moving 90 feet.
And our city driving is a red light every 300 ft.
constant speeding up and slowing down
standing a minute or two at a red light.. then the same over and over and over again
I get about 200 miles on 12 gallons of gas.
That's roughly 16.6 mpg.
The accurate way to calculate your MPG is:
1. Go to gas station and fill up to the TOP. until the pump cuts off. Reset your trip odometer
2. drive at least 1/2 tank and go back to the gas station
3. record the amount of miles you've driven since your last fill up..
4. repeat step 1, fill it up to the top until the pump stops
5. notice how many gallons you put into the car
6. take the # of miles you drove on the previous tank and divide it by the # of gallons you just put in..
= your exact gas milage.
I am getting killed by gas..
$2.13/gal with ~17 mpg and driving like 400 miles per week.. this sucks.

true, living in NYC probably has something to do with the stupid low gas mileage we get. Usually i base my calculation on gas on fill up til the low gas light comes on. Im gonna try out that one though NYCE Maxima and see how it works out. I think what kills me though is driving for 20 minutes for parking, then sitting in my car for breaks

Ditto....
My gas mileage is awful! My car is in tip top shape less than 46,000 miles . Change the oil every 3000 Mobil One.I Changed my Platinum plugs and cleaned my throttle body on April second. Had BG44K pumped through my injectors in late march & Tires are always properly inflated. Aswell I had a four wheel alignment just three weeks ago after installing new rims & tires. My K&N filter is perfectly clean on my stillen intake. And I always ,always use 93 0ctane gas from Sunoco or BP. In late march I drove my wifes 2002 CRV for a week and saw how well the gas lasted for that week & to be perfectly honest the CRV is not that great on gas but any way I decided to monitor my gas mileage over my last three fillups and this was from the point when the gas light goes on & then some so it was really empty. My gas mileage was as follows first tank no highway miles all city/ suburb driving 208 miles for the tank. My second tank included one highway trip that consisted of 62 miles and that tankful got me 241 miles & now the last tank has gotten me 218 all city driving. This is really crap I do drive a little hard light to light but 208 & 218 miles is unacceptable. I live in NewYork as well & I am really starting to believe it must have something to do with the areas or states gas anybody have any clue as to why these totals suck so bad????
I did my mileage on my 2000 GLE and got roughly 22 out of it. The previous owner took very good care of it (it also passed emissions with flying colors.
Routine maintenance and cleanliness (as well as losing the lead foot) makes a world of difference.
