Hey Guys- I had the opportunity to discuss the missing protector issue with my Nissan field rep this morning, after looking in the parts catalog & looking under several 2001s, he completely agreed that the protector should be in place. He said he was going to forward the info to the appropriate people within Nissan to get the process started to address this issue. Hopefully, the word will get out quicker this way! Oh, if anyone still needs the part #'s, they are:
17290-2Y000 Protector
01553-09321 Clips X4

Regards, David Burnette, South Point Nissan

Does this apply to 2000 model or just 2001 model only?
You are the best, thanks a lot!!!!!

I have yet to see a 2000 without the protector, or a 2001 with it. I've looked at about 30 cars. If anyone has a 2001 with, or a 2000 w/o, get me the specifics on the vehicle, (VIN, production date, etc), I can forward that info to my rep, any information we can provide Nissan with will speed the process of getting something done at a higher level.
Thanks! David Burnette, South Point Nissan

Dave,

I just got home from work and checked that card I got from the parts department telling me the parts were in. Low and behold, the part numbers you supplied at the beginning of this thread match up to the ones on the card. I was beginning to worry, based on the other posts over in the other thread about this, that there was some kind of disconnect (more than there already is) with Nissan.

I will be at the dealer tomorrow getting my parts installed. I know the 2001's on the showroom floor during my last visit had the guard so I will get you the information you requested (not sure you still need it after your last post but I'll jot it down anyway).

Can someone post some pictures of the missing parts? I have an 01 SE AE, and I have the dirt in the gas cap area but I didn't notice anything missing. Then again I haven't been able to visualize this thing.

Thanks

Mark,

I'll try and get some pix tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera (D'OH!) but can get some video and grab some frames to post up here. I'm sure the service guys are going to just love seeing me show up with a camcorder. I can see it now... "Sorry, Sir, but we're going to need that tape."

not on 2001's I've seen

None of the 2001 Maxima's (all models) at Round Rock Nissan had the cover. The service manager ordered mine and will install tomorrow after confirming they would work on a 2001.
The 2000 GXE on the lot had the cover!

Thanks very much, Dave!!

Say, where is South Point Nissan? If my local dealer bellies up on this issue, I would strongly consider hitting the road to find you if you're not three states away!

yep, we're lucky to have 3 good nissan dealers in this town.
Southpoint didn't have a blue AE (and they are 40 minutes away) so I didn't buy from them but have heard good things.

Round Rock Nissan installed mine free of charge today.

It looks like it will take care of all that nasty crap accumulating in the gas cap area.

So, besides the scratch on the first visit and the car door ding on the second visit Round Rock Nissan has done everything perfectly. Jorg, the service manager, is trying hard to keep me happy.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the great information.

Oh, and if a dealer just won't replace it ask him if it is worth a $17 part to lose a customer. The service manager told me it is only $18 total for the plastic cover and screws.

Russ@kSE - I posted some pics in the "Manufacturing Flaw - Must read for 2001 Maxima Owners" thread.

Enjoy.
