on 2002 i have stillen intake. b-pipe, and a 75 shot of nitrous. i would like to put on headers, but i dont have $1100(at least) sitting around to spend on the headers and install. What are some options i could do add hp. would i feel a difference in a aftermarket y-pipe and racing pipe( which i could do myself )? Would a udp help any. any help would be great! Thanks!

You'd have to get both. Hahaha its kind of a catch 22. you wont feel the maximum gains of the Y pipe unless u install headers too

y-pipe AND headers? Would you please share how you could install both? Let's say one wants to install WSP y-pipe and HotShot headers on his 02-03 Maxima. Will you please tell us how one can do that?

This comment has me a bit curious. If by only adding a Y pipe without headers, as you say, gives you no gains, then why do so many guys put upgrade to aftermarket ones? From what I recall, the Cattman gives you roughly 6-7 hp stock from what I remember reading. Even without the dyno results (which I'm sure Bryan Catts can provide as well as WSP and Budget) people's testimonies alone make be believe this comment is complete

Read this thread if you think I'm wrong.

Edit: Here is one directly from a Y pipe manufacturer.

An Unorthodox UDP will free up about 5-6hp to the wheels. If you do it yourself, it's worth it, if you have to pay someone on top of the cost, it's just not worth the money. Technosquare ECU is probably your best bet for a good price/performance mod.

HS headers come with a ypipe already. No need to even buy the WSP pipe if you get the headers. The statement about not increasing power is untrue. I emailed brian catts awhile back and he sent me copies of the dynos of the ypipe on a 2k2 and it showed gains. Here's an excerpt from that email:

The y-pipe makes very good power, well confirmed by customers now, but I've
also attached the Excel spreadsheet that analyzes the dyno data and dyno
graphs showing the difference between stock and y-pipe, and between y-pipe
and y-pipe + b-pipe. The spreadsheet begins with the stock vs y-pipe, then
the second table going down shows the impact of adding a Cattman B-pipe
after the y-pipe and the third table compares the stock run with the y-pipe
+ b-pipe run. The y-pipe + b-pipe combo (I'll put the "y-pipe over stock"
figures in parens) made as much as 18-19hp (10-15) and 22-23 ft/lbs (12-18)
TQ over stock on an automatic with a stock intake and over 11hp (7.7) and
12ft/lbs (8.4) average between 3800-6200rpm, which is pretty remarkable.

This is good info. I have read so many different opinions on this subject ranging from the aftermarket y-pipe offering 0 gains to 10-15 gains on a 5.5 gen. Just a few questions.

Just making sure I understand the above info. Is the 10-15 gain with just a y-pipe or does that include an aftermarket intake?

Also, I read in earlier posts some people saying there are fitment issues with the aftermarket y-pipes for the 5.5 gen. Is this still true or have they been worked out?

Is the aftermarket y-pipe street legal for 5.5 gens?

Thanks.

The 10-15 hp gain is with the stock airbox.

I think the fitment problem with them is one of the bolts is to long so it must be dremeled down.

You should pass inspection if you let the car warm up to normal temp before bringing it for emissions testing. I'm due for inspection this month and I'm getting my ypipe installed on saturday. Here in oregon though they only do emissions testing, nothing else.

Do you know if the fitment problem is unique to Cattman or does Warpspeed have this problem too?

Based on Cattman dyno for Y-pipe on auto 2003 Maxima:

adj adj
rpm hp bef hp aft difference
3800 150.67 157.93 7.3
3900 151.96 157.93 6.0
4000 153.35 157.50 4.1
4100 153.03 159.64 6.6
4200 155.72 163.50 7.8
4300 159.69 170.25 10.6
4400 167.31 183.10 15.8
4500 176.53 187.18 10.6
4600 182.12 190.93 8.8
4700 187.16 195.85 8.7
4800 190.92 200.89 10.0
4900 194.78 204.42 9.6
5000 199.82 208.28 8.5
5100 204.33 211.28 7.0
5200 206.58 213.64 7.1
5300 207.55 213.96 6.4
5400 207.33 213.53 6.2
5500 207.01 214.07 7.1
5600 208.09 215.35 7.3
5700 209.48 218.35 8.9
5800 212.49 221.03 8.5
5900 215.49 220.60 5.1
6000 216.78 221.25 4.5
6100 216.24 221.14 4.9
6200 214.63 221.35 6.7

Average 3800-6200
189.96 197.72 7.76

Now, the gains at 4200-5000rpm look solid enough for me to make the $325 purchase for just the Y-pipe.

Thanks for the great info. It would be great if there that level of data for Warpspeed too so you could compare the two side by side. Of course, there is also the matter of $125 difference.
